“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a death, which occurred in the 600 block of Maryland Avenue, Southwest, at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station.

On Monday, January 12, 2015 at approximately 3:30 pm, officers from the First District, along with members of the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, and Metro Transit Police, responded to the report of heavy smoke inside of the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station. Efforts began immediately to evacuate the station. DC Fire and EMS personnel transported multiple victims to local hospitals. One victim, an adult female was transported from the scene and later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The case is being investigated by members of the Arson and Explosives Task Force, which includes members from MPD, DCFEMS and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The decedent has been identified as 61-year-old Carol Glover of Alexandria, Virginia.”

“As of 5 a.m., normal Green Line service has been restored in both directions.

During the Tuesday morning commute, trains will operate as follows:
• Green Line: Regular service, every 6 minutes, between Branch Ave & Greenbelt
• Orange Line: Trains every 8 minutes between Vienna & New Carrollton
• Silver Line: Trains every 12 minutes between Wiehe-Reston East & Largo, with 8-car trains to provide additional capacity
• Blue Line: Trains every 12 minutes at Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street, every 6 minutes at all other stations
Yellow Line: Service is replaced by additional Blue Line trains running between Huntington & Largo every 12 minutes

All Metrorail stations are open.”

“Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement regarding the Metrorail fatality during this afternoon’s commute:

“We are all saddened by today’s fatality aboard the Metrorail, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the passenger who passed away. I want to thank our brave first responders who assisted passengers during the evacuation and with treatment at the scene. I have been in contact with the WMATA leadership, and we will continue to keep the District’s resources available in the aftermath of the incident.”

The source of the smoke has not been determined. The station has been evacuated and is temporarily closed at this time.

Metro has activated tunnel fans to ventilate the area.

• Yellow Line service is SUSPENDED between Pentagon City and Mt Vernon Square.

“The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (Board) suspended Heritage India/The Zanzibar’s liquor license today as the result of an incident that occurred at the establishment on Saturday, Jan. 3 where a patron was stabbed.

The Board found that the establishment—located at 1901 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW—presents an imminent danger to the health and safety of the public. As a result of the Board’s decision, Heritage India/The Zanzibar is prohibited from selling and serving alcoholic beverages. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) provided the establishment with a formal notice this evening informing them of the suspension.

The Board made its decision after reviewing a thorough investigation conducted by ABRA of the incident. Heritage India/The Zanzibar has remained closed since 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 under the authority of Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy L. Lanier.”
