Today’s question is a reader request. A year ago we first learned about plans for transforming the historic Franklin School building into “exhibit space for contemporary art, sculpture, installations and performances”. Folks were pretty excited about the prospect and then plans were scrapped. The art critic from the Post eviscerated the decision by the Mayor:
“Little more than a month into her administration, Muriel Bowser has abruptly canceled one of the most promising cultural projects to take root in the District in decades, tearing up an agreement two years in the making with the Institute of Contemporary Expression.
The city’s office for planning and economic development has decided after a “top-to-bottom review” that it no longer supports the plan. And so we have a first, clear and painful indication that despite professed support for the arts and arts education, Bowser will prioritize the interests of commercial developers over the public well-being.”
So I guess the question is – what do you think should be done with the building? Should there be a preference towards a cultural institution like was proposed before? Or should top dollar win? Do you think a place like the Institute of Contemporary Expression could flourish in a place like the Franklin School? Do you think the decision to cancel the project was political? If a museum/cultural institution has no chance – what would be the next best thing?

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a person of interest in reference to the homicide of 30 year-old David Messerschmitt of Northeast, Washington, DC, who was discovered on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at approximately 11:12 am, in the 1100 block of 14th Street, Northwest. The below photo of the person of interest was taken inside of the Donavan Hotel at approximately 7:45 pm, on February 9, 2015.
The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons wanted for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

“On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at approximately 11:12 am, officers from the Third District responded to a call for an unconscious person inside of the Donavan Hotel located in the 1100 block of 14th Street, NW. Upon arrival, they located an adult male, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from apparent stab wounds. The decedent was transported to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.”

Boloco burritos abruptly closed back in December on 19th between K and L streets. It is unrecognizable now as the wood front has been removed. But I noticed a new permit up saying a new restaurant is coming. Washington Business Journal reported it will be a:
“Red Robin’s Burger Works. This will be the second D.C. location for the Red Robin burger concept. The first is located at L’Enfant Plaza.”

“New restaurant specializing in quick-service, casual, artisanal sandwiches. Seating for 30 inside the premises and total occupancy load of 90. Sidewalk Cafe with seating for 15 patrons. No entertainment.”
Hours are listed as Sunday through Saturday 11am – 9pm.

“Dear PoPville,
I walked past the Twelve & K Hotel last night (formerly the Four Points by Sheraton) and saw they were closed. The main lobby entrance has a sign about who to call for deliveries, and another door has security company contact information. It’s a little bit strange to look inside the lobby and see nobody inside. District Grill is also shuttered, and the hotel website is gone too (http://www.twelveandkhotel.com/). I know the property was sold over the summer to the company that also owns the Langham Hotel chain so perhaps something else is on the way?”
