Brendan writes: “yesterday they took down the Christmas Tree in Columbia Heights, and it is just laying on its side in the plaza…any bets on when they actually cart it off? Reminder that last year, it was around February 1”

And because it’s 2020, I got an email this morning, preemptively, responding to Brendan’s concerns:

“District Bridges broke it down on Thursday and I wanted to share with you that it has been scheduled for pick-up by DPW for composting. They are picking up the fence today and the tree will be picked up either the 15th-16th”

Readers starting reported about 7-8 shots fired around 4:15pm.

From MPD:

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting in the 1300 block of Columbia Rd NW. Two adult males have been transported to area hospitals with non life threatening injuries.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect road closures in the area as we investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

From the folks at Lou’s:

“We’ve now enclosed the heated outdoor patio at Lou’s City Bar and turned it into a winter beer garden. We are doing launch events all month with different breweries during the NFL playoffs, starting with a Port City takeover today through the weekend and followed by Heavy Seas next weekend and Bell’s the following. The Winter Beer Garden is fully enclosed, heated, and pet friendly, with outdoor TVs and our patio bar. (more…)

Nick writes: Allegro Cleaners dry cleaning (next to Thip Khao on 14th) abruptly went out of business in late December. I was wondering if anyone has any info on what happened/what they think will be replacing it. Seems like a good space”

Another reader writes that she was having trouble picking up her clothing from Jin’s at 1944 New Hampshire Ave, NW. Have others been able to get their clothes?

14th and Euclid St, NW

From MPD:

“The Third District is currently investigating an incident at 14th and Fairmont Streets NW. An unknown subject fired a weapon in the area which struck the window a vehicle, shattering the window. An adult male has sustained minor lacerations from the shattering glass and is being treated by medics at this time. The subject firing the weapon fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect road closures in the area as we continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

A reader shares some frustration and more details about the Saturday morning shooting inside the Capitol View building at 14th and Belmont Street, NW:

“The UDR building management has sought to downplay this incident from the start. They didn’t send any message to residents until more than 3 hours after the incident occurred with very little information. Then when they did follow-up several more hours later, the message is an unacceptable minimization of their knowledge of the ongoing problem with this unit, the seriousness of the incident itself and the severity of the damage caused.

Per the MPD on the scene, multiple rounds were fired within the fourth floor hallway. The gunfire was not confined to the unit. Please see the attached photo of the bullet hole in the elevator landing wall. If it’s not an “on-going threat to the community” now, it certainly was when bullets were flying in a common space at 9 a.m. on a Saturday! (more…)

Multiple readers reported around 10am. One wrote: “There were shots fired and bullet casings on one of the floors. Police are there now. Fire alarm was pulled and sprinklers were activated. Some flooding in the building. That’s all I know! Can you find out anything else?!?”

MPD reported at 10:20am:

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting inside of a building in the 2400 block of 14th St. NW. An adult male is being treated at an area hospital for a gunshot wound to the upper body and is stable.

Anyone with information is asked to call (202) 727-9099.”

Update: Thanks to Elizabeth and all who sent the following note from building management:

The Legal Cliche first alerted us around 9:30am: “Big police presence with guns drawn.”

Update from a reader 10:35am: “I live nearby, saw them bring out two teenagers/young adults just now. Looks like they may have been in the red house because earlier they had them come to the front window on the top floor and put their hands up. Then it was like 30 mins until they just brought them out. One kid went into a cop car without issue, the other just resisted getting in and they pushed him around until he got in. Rest of the cops are leaving now. It was quite the scene over the past hour.” (more…)

A reader reported Saturday night around 7:30pm from the 1300 Block Newton St NW:

“We had 7 shots fired outside of our house on Newton St, just east of 14th. Based on our camera it was targeted- there was a verbal altercation and then the shooting. Not sure if anyone was hit. First shot came from one guy, second guy made six shots while retreating. What’s more upsetting is that it took 2 calls and 17 minutes for the cops to arrive.”

Another reader reports this morning shots fired on Gallatin between Georgia and 9th NW:

“woke up to 5 or 6 gunshots around 3am. Police arrived in less than 2 minutes but seems like they didn’t find anyone. Looked like they may have found casings in front of the DC fire truck maintenance house on Gallatin. No twitter posts from MPD.”

Ed. Note: MPD usually doesn’t post twitter alerts unless a person was hit (occassionally when there is property damage, but usually only when a person is injured or worse.)

11th and Lamont St, NW

From La Tejana:

“Following last week‘s sold out event at Room 11, La Tejana’s Tex-Mex breakfast taco pop-up is returning tomorrow (Saturday 12/14 from 10 am – sellout) with a double batch of homemade flour tortillas, chorizo, migas, papas con huevo and boozy topo chico. Because holiday shopping is better when slightly buzzed and three breakfast tacos deep…

Shout out to everyone who came out last weekend (and waited patiently for their tacos – shorter wait times are guaranteed this weekend). Might even be a surprise or two in store”

Anyone take a taste last week?
