A long history of “temporary closures” here.

Thanks to Amanda for sending:

“Pidzza in the DCUSA building in Columbia Heights was “closed for renovations,” but from the new help wanted sign, it looks like it is turning into The Ritual Cafe. Hopefully this business breaks the curse because there has been a lot of turnover in this little spot.” (more…)

From DDOT:

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced a year-long demonstration project of bus lanes on 14th Street NW in Columbia Heights designed to improve bus performance as well as pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

“Washingtonians are riding the bus more than ever before, especially in the thriving 14th Street NW corridor,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “We expect this project to help us advance Mayor Bowser’s goal of improving bus service across all eight wards, particularly for transit-reliant residents.”

The demonstration project, set to begin this summer, will be installed on 14th NW Street between Euclid and Newton Streets NW. (more…)

Readers reported around 2:15am: “Did anyone in Columbia heights hear about 8 gunshots in a row?”

“YES.” “Ugh, yes.” “Sounds like a full clip to me (heard from 15th and Euclid St, NW)” “Yes, woke my gf and I up.”

“I called 911 for the 2:15 shooting, the dispatcher was clearly annoyed that I didn’t run to my window in the middle of a shooting to see if I could get any other details, and then I never saw any sign of the police.”

And

“FWIW, I heard what sounded exactly like two gun shots this morning at 4:05 am; we live in the 2700 block of Woodley Place NW (very close to the elevator for the Woodley Park metro). The apparent gun shots and subsequent laughter were captured on our security camera, but it didn’t show any actual suspicious activity.) I called it in to 911 immediately.

This is the second time we’ve heard gun shots in the last few months at our house. The last time was the incident during Zoo Lights.”

A reader reports:

“5-7 gunshots near target in columbia heights”

“Lots of gunshots from two different guns near 14th and Fairmont just now. Heard some cars speeding off as well…”

“My boyfriend was coming out of our building at 14th and Fairmont when it happened– at least 5-10 shots. Cannot believe we haven’t seen any police cars come in yet ???”

“Finally starting to block off 14th at Girard, presumably between there and Fairmont, but yeah it feels like very little fanfare. Guess it’s been a busy night for them.”

“Dear PoPville,

It didn’t get an alert from MPD, but two shots were fired on Irving Street across the street from the Tubman Elementary playground at 3:30 Wednesday. Heard them personally from about 100 feet away. I called 911 and they said someone else called it in. It happened across the street by the gate to the field. Kids were out on the playground for aftercare and were immediately brought in. It lasted about 10 minutes.

Two weeks ago there was a parent safety meeting at the school with MPD, DCPS, and Councilmember Nadeau’s office and they offered nothing to help the situation with shootings happening around the school.”

I got tons of messages yesterday starting around 5:30pm like this one:

“I just saw 10+ uniformed police at Columbia Heights metro, complete with a table set up for bag searches and a scanning device of some sort. A few uniforms said anti-terrorism, others TSA. I heard them telling people they stopped that checks were random. Do you have any context on this?”

Metro Transit Police have been doing random searches since at least 2008. We also spoke about random inspections in 2010.
