“Dear PoPville,
I was walking with a friend in Meridian Hill Park yesterday and noticed a small detail in a photo of a globe sculpture at the bottom of the park. I found a photo online that more clearly shows the globe sculpture.
However, that sculpture is no longer there, instead replaced buy a big spherical bush. Upon further investigation, it appears the pedestal is still there, in the center of the bush, but there is no sculpture.
In searching for other photos of it, I found a blog of a amateur history sleuth who has tried to track it down. The sphere was the “Armillary Sphere” and is a bit of a mystery. Apparently it was damaged in the 1960s and removed for repairs, but it’s whereabouts is unknown to the Smithsonian or National Park Service (rather amazing for a 16 foot sculpture).
Anyway, I’m not sure if there is much more than can be found out about this mystery, but I’d be fascinated if anyone knew more about it. What happened to it? Was it relocated? Stolen? Damaged?”

“On Sunday, October 12, 2014, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers responded to a radio run for sounds of gun shots in the area of 3500 New Hampshire Avenue NW. After officers canvassed the area, nothing was found. Shortly thereafter, an individual arrived at a local hospital suffering from a single gunshot wound to his left foot. The complainant stated to the officers that he believed he had been shot in the vicinity of 11th & Monroe Streets NW, however no suspect information was provided. Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099. Thank you.”

“On today’s date [Thursday], between the hours of 7-8pm, members of 3-D VICE conducted a “VICE Prostitution Reversal” operation along the 3D/4D border of 14th Street,NW.
This operation stemmed from numerous recent complaints of illegal prostitution during the recent 3D/4D border Community Meetings.
During this operation, a total of six (6) adult male defendants were arrested each of whom were seeking sexual favors in exchange for the promise of monetary compensation.
All of the Defendants were arrested and charged with “Solicitation of Prostitution.”
Thank you to the 3D/4D citizens for the intel and information that helped make this a successful operation.”

“Accident at 11th and Girard at 2:30am last night
Driver was heading EB on Girard travelling at about 50 mph. When he crossed 11th he must have lost control and smashed into the wall in front of the house on the SW corner. The car ended up on its side. Luckily there was a police officer travelling shortly behind the driver so he was the first on the scene. They pulled the driver from the car alive and took him away in an ambulance. I can only imagine that the driver was drunk but I don’t know for sure.”

“Around 5:30 pm, units received a call for a man down in the 3400 blk of 14th St NW. Upon arrival, an adult male was located suffering from an apparent stab wound. The male was transported to an area hospital where he has been pronounced. This case is being investigated by Detectives with the Homicide Branch. The 3400 blk of 14th St NW is temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide which occurred in the 3400 block of 14th Street, NW.
On Friday, October 3, 2014 at approximately 5:33 pm, members of the Fourth District responded to a call for a man down. Upon arrival, they located the victim, 35-year-old Kenneth Young Jr. of Northwest, DC suffering from an apparent stab wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”
