“Dear PoPville,

Last night my husband and I were walking home near Columbia and Harvard and I noticed a woman kicking something down the street. As we turned the corner I realized she was attacking a baby mouse (or rat…either way this thing was a baby). She was chasing it up and down the sidewalk kicking it every chance she could get until the mouse stopped moving. I couldn’t believe it. The way she kept going after it seemed vicious and cruel. Whoa – Ross reports:

“Competition for &pizza in old Zombie Donuts space in Columbia Heights?”

&pizza opened in the Columbia Heights Plaza back in March 2016. Zombie Donuts closed in December of last year. Pidzza has locations in Chinatown, Ivy City and most recently opened on U Street. You can see their menu here.

As I was typing this up I just got this email from Matthew:

“Pidzza in Chinatown. This has been up for close to 2 weeks now.

A friend tells me the pizza sauces were too spicy so she only had the pizza once, but wished they had a non-spicy sauce because she would eat there more often.”

Updates when we have an opening date in Columbia Heights and more info on Chinatown.

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking up 14th St towards the Columbia Heights metro (around 7:55-8 am at 14th and Columbia) and saw a man on a bike yelling at a car in front of him (they were heading south on 14th). I didn’t see anything before, but I assume that the car cut him off or something. But I did see the car (black Dodge minivan with DC plates) slow down, and then purposely swerve into the lane that the biker (white male, maybe in his 50s?) was in. He didn’t hit the biker, but the biker seemed to put his left arm out in an effort to “push” the car back (it looked like the biker had his full palm on the car, so the car was very close to him). I didn’t see anything beyond that, but I still felt like this was important enough to report in case something did happen. I called the police (District 3) to see if I could report anything, and they said there was nothing I could do. Is there really nothing to help bikers corroborate any incidents that occur?”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Bowser announced 2500 14th Street, NW as the site of the Ward 1 Short-Term Family Housing program, marking another step forward in the Administration’s effort to close and replace DC General Family Shelter with dignified, service-enriched programs across all eight wards.

“Ending homelessness is a citywide challenge that requires a citywide solution. Today, with the selection of the Ward 1 short-term family housing site, we are one step closer to closing and replacing DC General,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are grateful for the partnership of Councilmember Nadeau and the Commissioners of ANC 1B, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Ward 1 community as we move forward with this exciting project.”

The Ward 1 site is the final location selected in the District’s citywide plan to close and replace the aging and isolated DC General Family Shelter. The site plan includes 35 short-term family housing apartment-style units to support families experiencing a housing crisis; 15 units of permanent supportive housing for seniors; and improvements to the Rita Bright Family and Youth Center, which is also located at the site. Construction at the site is slated to begin in January 2019 and be completed by the spring of 2020. (more…)
