Thanks to a reader for the heads up about Grand Trunk now hiring. I was optimistic last month and even more so when I spotted the new signage above and the reader saw the posting for jobs:

Restaurant coming to the awesome Bulletin Building in Chinatown to be called Bar Deco

Last week a reader sent word that a new restaurant “with 66 seats on the second floor, 57 seats on the third floor, 63 seats on the fourth floor” was coming to the beautiful Bulletin Building in Chinatown. The restaurant has now posted a placard for a liquor license under the name Bar Deco:

“New Restaurant. Occupancy load is 357. Summer Garden with 48 seats.”

Updates when they get closer to opening.

Washington Wizards Happy Hour Group Meets in Chinatown Before Games

“Dear PoPville,

I organize a Wizards fan happy hour group. We hold a 1 hour happy hour before each home Wizards game at a different bar in Chinatown/PennQuarter each time. The idea is for Wizards fans to interact with each other, as well as to explore the city around the arena.

Tonight we are going to Carmine’s [425 7th Street, NW] to check out their happy hour. The Wizards also gave me (through a contest) a $50 gift card so I’m going to cover a bunch of appetizers for our group. We meet up between 6pm-7pm.”

Demo Begins at 10th and F Street, NW – New Office Building Coming with Retail including American Eagle

Thanks to a reader for sending word that demo has started at this future office building with retail from Douglas Development:

“1000 F Street NW will be a boutique, trophy quality new 11-story office and retail building located near Metro Center in the heart of Washington, DC’s East End/Penn Quarter neighborhood. The development includes ten levels of office space, ground floor retail with two levels of below grade parking. The project incorporates a two-story designated historic structure at the corner of 10th and F Streets, the facades of which will be restored and the interior completely renovated and fuilly integrated with the contemporary building.

Designed by the highly acclaimed architectural firm Shalom Baranes Associates, this building will seeks to achieve a minimum of a LEED Silver rating. The two primary street facades of the building will be clad with high performance curtain walls composed of terra cotta and metal panels with extensive portions of vision glazing accented by horizontal metal sunscreens. The building will feature multiple outdoor terraces and green roofs tops.”

Missed it in January but Washington Business Journal reported that American Eagle Outfitters would be taking 7,000 square feet.

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) recently announced the launch of parkDC: Chinatown/Penn Quarter, the multimodal value pricing pilot, which is expected to make parking easier and reduce congestion. The pilot will encompass all 1,300 metered on-street parking spaces in the area bounded by H Street, NW; E Street, NW; 11th Street, NW; and 3rd Street, NW. This pilot will use the Chinatown/Penn Quarter area as a laboratory to test state-of-the-art strategies to make it easier to find parking spaces and reduce congestion. The project will accomplish this by doing the following:

(a) Providing real-time parking-availability information so customers spend less time searching, and

(b) Changing parking pricing so more spaces are available,

(c) Making parking signage more easily understood. (more…)

I was running past The Bulletin building in Chinatown and saw permits up in the windows.

The permitting record makes clear the renovations are for a restaurant “with 66 seats on the second floor, 57 seats on the third floor, 63 seats on the fourth floor, for a total of 186 seats and a maximum occupancy of 311 persons.”

Would love to know more about what they’ve got planned.”

“The second annual Architects for Animals’ project, “Giving Shelter,” returns to aid Washington DC’s homeless, stray and outdoor cats on Wednesday, January 14, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at The American Institute of Architects, 1735 New York Avenue, NW. The event will benefit the Washington Humane Society (WHS).

Outdoor cats with no particular home or owner are vulnerable to the harsh conditions of winter. Architects for Animals launched in New York City in 2010 asking architects and designers to create the most inspired winter shelters imaginable for outdoor cats. At past events, architects created a breathtaking assortment of stylish outdoor winter shelters to help keep homeless cats warm during the frigid winter months. The undertaking helped to create new awareness about the plight of NYC’s feral and free-roaming cats, and has since spread to DC and Los Angeles. (more…)

Lobster grilled cheese returns this Friday to Luke’s Lobster
