10th and Franklin St, NE

Here’s a great update on the “gourmet food hall with 8-10 independent food vendors, a bar, and a grocery market” coming to Egewood/Brookland. WDCEP posts an interview with the owner:

“Captain Cookie is about to launch a second location and incubator space to help local food businesses scale. Named “Tastemakers” the 9,000 sq ft incubator space will open in Ward 5’s Brookland neighborhood in early September. There will be industrial kitchen space for local food companies, a small grocery store, and another Captain Cookie storefront. The store will feature 6-8 food vendors and have a bar.”

STAY TUNED.

Hmm, the address listed for Bri’s Brookland Creamery is 3301 9th Street, NE appears to be residential. The Facebook page says:

“Coming soon: Homemade small batch gourmet ice cream made right in Brookland, DC.”

There was a “tasting event” last Sunday – did anybody go?

UPDATE: “We’re still in the early stages, it’ll initially be pop ups, catering and farmers markets…still figuring out commercial kitchen space.”

STAY TUNED.

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Brookland and absolutely love it. However, my neighbor across the alleyway does not have running water. As a result, he regularly urinates in the alleyway. He also has guests who have in the past urinated in the alley and defecated in a neighbor’s backyard (not even his own, which somehow bothered me more). I’ve talked to him about this to no avail – the house has a huge overdue water bill that he can’t pay, and it’s way too high for me to consider paying it for my own sanity. I contacted DCRA but they never sent anyone. Any thoughts on how to handle this? Is this even legal, to live without running water?”

Michelle tweets:

“Is some place called Fox Loves Taco replacing @MonroeStMarket’s @filter_coffee?”

Back in April we broke the news that Filter was closing and a new spot from the Little Red Fox folks would be taking over the space featuring a:

“variety of healthy take out foods, breakfast burritos and coffee drinks.”

Their Facebook page says:

“Serving specialty coffee & breakfast tacos in Brookland. Opening late Summer.”

From DDOT:

“Reconstruction of Monroe Street NE Bridge

The Monroe Street Bridge is a three-span prestressed concrete bridge supported by two concrete abutments and two reinforced concrete piers, all supported by shallow foundations. The bridge structure carries Monroe Street NE over the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and CSX tracks as well as the Brookland-CUA Metro platform. The existing bridge is approximately 122 feet long and 66 feet wide.

The existing Monroe Street Bridge was built in 1931 and underwent a major rehabilitation in 1974. However, the bridge’s deteriorated condition is such that it must be reconstructed rather than be repaired. (more…)
