Back in early June we learned that Halal Kabob House was coming to the former Piccante Pizza space on 18th Street. Their website says:

“Our menu is based on simple grill Kabobs where the taste and quality stands for what we believe in. We wanted to create a neighborhood restaurant that serves delightful Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine. The restaurant is simple, casual and inviting. Although small, the jovial atmosphere is sure to make newcomers feel welcome. Curries and Kabobs dominate the menu, but there is also vegetarian and fish section as well. The lentils and chickpeas are hearty and well seasoned. The naan bread, prepared on the premises, is delicious. The desserts are extraordinary sweet. Get entertained today by the delicious food.”

Ed. Note: Their menu is not up to date on their website. Here’s what the posted out front (sorry if it’s a bit small). Updates when they announce an opening date.

From a press release:

“It’s a Brewery! Celebrating the “rebirth” of San Francisco-based Shmaltz Brewing Co., DC’s Jack Rose Dining Saloon is christening the brewery’s new NYC home with a rooftop tap takeover party hosted by Shmaltz brewmaster himself, Jeremy Cowan, on Saturday, July 20 at 2PM. The alfresco celebration will feature 24 Shmaltz brews on draft, from the cask and in rare vintage bottles – including the limited-release Death of a Contract Brewer IPA – as well as celebratory cigars, creative deli fare and an afternoon of beer and shower-themed games like baby bottle bowling and beer bingo.

“Born” in San Francisco in 1996, Shmaltz is being “rebirthed” now in 2013 with its new 20,000-square-foot, 50-barrel brewing home in Clifton Park, NY. With the help of Jack Rose beer director Nahem Simon, Shmaltz is taking over the rooftop’s tap handles with brews from its loved He’Brew and Coney Island Lagers lines as well as launching the uber-rare, exclusive Death of a Contract Brewer Commemorative Black IPA, making Jack Rose the only place outside of NYC to taste this celebratory limited-release brew.

Since 18 is a sacred number in the Jewish tradition, Jack Rose will be featuring 18 award-winning Shmaltz beers on draft and cask, including the first keg of Death of a Contract Brewer Commemorative Black IPA to make it outside of NYC (more…)

“The new location of Mediterranean Spot on 18th St in Adams Morgan opened last night. We stopped in to check on the owner this evening and the place looks beautiful! They are going to have outdoor seating and pizza at this location.”

Mediterranean Spot_adams_morgan

The Adams Morgan location is in the former Carribou Coffee/Uptowner Cafe space at 2421 18th St, NW.

The OP adds: “We went back at 10pm last night and I tried the pizza with chicken shawarma on top – it was delicious.”

A couple of weeks ago we learned their 15th and U St, NW location would be applying for a liquor license, sidewalk seating and adding brick oven pizzas.

Not even a couple years ago many folks would go ballistic whenever someone wrote AdMo instead of the full Adams Morgan. I don’t know if it’s because of twitter (character restrictions etc.) but I now see folks using AdMo all the time. And it seems most folks’ heads don’t explode. Obviously there are those who will go ballistic but I think they are in the minority now. Though I guess this is only for the written form. Do you ever hear people say AdMo instead of the full Adams Morgan? Has CoHi also become an acceptable written abbreviation for Columbia Heights?

Back in Aug. 2012 we noted the new Toledo Lounge had closed for renovations. The original Toledo Lounge was sold back in Feb. 2011 to the owners of the Black Squirrel and Ventnor Cafe.  Libertine has finally arrived featuring “one of the country’s largest absinthe selections”.

Update. Thanks to Libertine for a sending a photo of the inside and the menus:

“Libertine, a cocktail house and bistro, located at 2435 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, will hold its grand opening on Tuesday (July 9), starting at 5 p.m.

Libertine features one of the country’s largest absinthe selection with 30 different labels, many that were specially ordered from Europe, 10 specialty cocktails and four cocktail draft lines, a potpourri of small-batch spirits and locally produced wines, and craft beer draft lines. Flights of draft cocktail are available.

The name Libertine is a nod to the absinthe and spirits program as well as free-thinkers and those who live an unrestrained life. (more…)

From a press release:

“To celebrate their 9th Annual Bastille Day Block Party and French Maid Race, L’Enfant Café Bar adds aerialists to a line-up that includes a French maid race, can-can dancers, masquerade ball and raffle for two round-trip tickets from Washington (DCA) to Paris (CDG), courtesy of U.S. Airways. The party runs 3-11 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Says co-owner Jim Ball, “We are sticklers to tradition and will celebrate Bastille Day on Saturday night – along with the French. Vivre le time difference!”

In less than a decade, this event has grown to become the largest Bastille Day party in the Western Hemisphere. Co-hosted by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette – who look a strikingly similar to L’Enfant’s co-owners Jim Ball and Christopher Lynch – L’Enfant’s Bastille Day Block Party will take over Vernon Street, NW, between 18th and19th Streets. Doors open at 3p.m. The street party concludes at 11p.m.

Entry to D.C.’s most revolutionary summer party is $6.

Guests are invited to chill to DJs and enjoy five street bars serving beer:

Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe, white wine and a vodka cocktail. A food truck station will offer refreshments from popular purveyors including DC Slices, Rito Loco and Pleasant Pops.

French maid relay race will start at 6 p.m. L’Enfant will provide costumes for 40 competitors. Racers must each wear the extremely short black and white dress to participate. The winner is the first to fill a Champagne glass with soupspoons of water by running back and forth across the street the coupe. Says Ball, “It’s got all of the fun and excitement of the Grand Prix, and none of the elegance.”

After the race, DJ booths will be rolled into Vernon Street and Queen Marie Antoinette will gift all attendees with a mask.”
