1346 T Street, NW

Back in Sept. ’12 we learned that Cafe Collage had closed at 1346 T St, NW just east of Cafe Saint-Ex. Now we know who’s coming to the space – a new tavern to be called Street. A liquor license application posted out front says:

“New Tavern, serving international street cuisine. Occasional live entertainment and DJ. Occupancy load is 99. Sidewalk Café with 15 seats. Summer Garden with 14 seats.”

Sounds very very promising!

Relaxation and tranquility is coming to U Street. Urban Adventures Companies, Inc. (UAC), the DC-based urban lifestyle and entertainment company, announced today that construction has begun for Aura Spa at VIDA Fitness-U Street, located at the company’s flagship fitness and lifestyle complex at 1612 U Street, NW. Positioned directly off VIDA’s first floor lobby, the new 5,000 square-foot Aura Spa will be the company’s third location and most advanced day spa with larger treatment rooms, an expanded menu of services and cutting-edge design finishes. A couple days ago I got word of new happy hour at Saint-Ex [1847 14th Street, NW.] From a press release:

The restaurant is offering $2.00 off all draft beers and $1.00 off all rail cocktails, as well as rotating food specials, including half-price house-cut French fries and Old Bay-puffed pork rinds, as well as $15.00 moules frites.

Café Saint-Ex’s new Happy Hour runs from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Tuesday through Friday downstairs in Gate 54, where the city’s hippest DJs are spinning a variety of music – such as house, new age, old-school hip hop and rock – each and every weekday night.

The Happy Hour also occurs from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, at the upstairs bar.

It occurred to me that we’ve never done a proper judging of Saint-Ex. Back in the day this used to be THE spot among many of my friends. What’s the word nowadays? What do you think of the bar downstairs, Gate 54? The food upstairs? You can see their menus here. Any must order items?

I often stumble upon old (not even that old really) photos of what certain buildings used to look like in the archives here. It always amazes me. Given the rapid developments going on all over the city I thought I’d start an occasional series when I accidentally come across a photo that looks completely different today.

If anyone has a photo of an area/building/lot that has changed please send me an email at princeofpetworth(at)gmail with ‘Remember When?’ in the subject line. Thanks!

So here goes Vol. 1 – the building now home to Room and Board.

From a press release:

DC’s newest and coolest coworking space, WorkDistrict, will open its doors in January 2013. Located in a former TV studio and Living Social event space, WorkDistrict will provide low-cost office, conference and event space, plus operational, growth and funding resources for startups and micro-businesses.

WorkDistrict is different, says co-founder Paul Ballas. “Thanks to low overhead, we’re far cheaper than other coworking spaces, allowing us to support a broader range of businesses. For less than the cost of two lattes a day, our members get collaborative work space, a street address, internet access and office support (and all the free coffee they can drink).”

“Our culture is special,” adds Ballas. “We’re a membership-driven organization focused on tech, sports and other creative businesses. Membership is by application only, and new members must be approved by existing members.”

WorkDistrict is located at 2217 14th Street, NW, Second Floor. Starting January 2013, WorkDistrict will be open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (24/7 access optional). Daily, monthly and longer-term memberships are available. Applications and further information may be found at www.workdistrict.com.

Not to be outpaced by Logan Circle, comes more big U Street news.

“Dear PoPville,

I heard about H & Pizza expanding to U Street (in the Quiznos location at 13th & U). I’ve never been to H & Pizza, but the Yelp reviews seem very good. Think this concept will do well on U Street?”

Last week CityPaper’s Jessica Sidman shared the big news:

“that the restaurant has signed a lease for a 1,200 square foot space at 1250 U St. NW, which currently is home to a Quiznos. He hopes to open in the spring.”

We haven’t done a proper judging of H &Pizza located at 1118 H St, NE but from what I hear if the quality is a good as people say they will do phenomenally well on U Street.

Any fans of H &Pizza? Think they’ll do well at this location on U Street?
