Southwest corner of 14th and T St, NW in 2009

I often stumble upon old (not even that old really) photos of what certain buildings used to look like in the archives here. It always amazes me. Given the rapid developments going on all over the city I thought I’d start an occasional series when I accidentally come across a photo that looks completely different today.

If anyone has a photo of an area/building/lot that has changed please send me an email at princeofpetworth(at)gmail with ‘Remember When?’ in the subject line. Thanks!

So here goes Vol. 1 – the building now home to Room and Board.

From a press release:

DC’s newest and coolest coworking space, WorkDistrict, will open its doors in January 2013. Located in a former TV studio and Living Social event space, WorkDistrict will provide low-cost office, conference and event space, plus operational, growth and funding resources for startups and micro-businesses.

WorkDistrict is different, says co-founder Paul Ballas. “Thanks to low overhead, we’re far cheaper than other coworking spaces, allowing us to support a broader range of businesses. For less than the cost of two lattes a day, our members get collaborative work space, a street address, internet access and office support (and all the free coffee they can drink).”

“Our culture is special,” adds Ballas. “We’re a membership-driven organization focused on tech, sports and other creative businesses. Membership is by application only, and new members must be approved by existing members.”

WorkDistrict is located at 2217 14th Street, NW, Second Floor. Starting January 2013, WorkDistrict will be open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (24/7 access optional). Daily, monthly and longer-term memberships are available. Applications and further information may be found at www.workdistrict.com.

Not to be outpaced by Logan Circle, comes more big U Street news.

“Dear PoPville,

I heard about H & Pizza expanding to U Street (in the Quiznos location at 13th & U). I’ve never been to H & Pizza, but the Yelp reviews seem very good. Think this concept will do well on U Street?”

Last week CityPaper’s Jessica Sidman shared the big news:

“that the restaurant has signed a lease for a 1,200 square foot space at 1250 U St. NW, which currently is home to a Quiznos. He hopes to open in the spring.”

We haven’t done a proper judging of H &Pizza located at 1118 H St, NE but from what I hear if the quality is a good as people say they will do phenomenally well on U Street.

Any fans of H &Pizza? Think they’ll do well at this location on U Street?

14th and U Street, NW

Speaking about the new Italian restaurant coming to U Street yesterday, some readers mentioned how excited they were for Coppi’s to reopen after the Louis construction is completed at 14th and U St, NW. Well I saw something curious and I’m wondering what you guys think. On Coppi’s website they write:

“Update!! We are under construction! Anyone ready for the next chapter? Thank you for your continued support. We have something amazing in the making, stay tuned!”

But walking by U Street you see the following sign for DC Noodles:

And for Utopia:

But in front of Coppi’s there is no reopening in 2013 sign, only this:

Am I thinking too deeply on this?

12th and S St, NW

In late October we finally learned who would be moving into the long vacant retail space at the corner of 12th and S St, NW. I stopped by yesterday and was told The Coffee Bar will be opening on Thursday or Friday (depending on some final paperwork.) Hours will be 7am-6pm. The space wasn’t completely photo ready but you can tell it’s gonna be pretty sweet. It is dominated by a huge bar and will have seating for around 35-40. There will be “no rules” wifi available. There will be pastries and Bethesda bagels among other eats. And of course we are talking some serious coffee here. The Cadillac of Coffee makers- La Marzocco:
