Next up on awesome DPR park renovations – Harrison Playground and rec center:

“The design for Harrison plays on the musical history of neighboring U Street, featuring musical themes in the walkways and play spaces and in a musical instrument-themed mist station, designed to keep kids cool in the summer. In addition to updating the equipment for younger children and older children, DPR and DGS will install a multi-purpose backstop on the small sport court; the backstop includes a soccer goal and a basketball rim! Visitors of all ages will be able to relax on new seating: a seat wall around the water feature and picnic benches under the trees that are currently outside of the fence, but will be included in the space in the redesign.”

DPR tells me that the opening is “literally days away”!

Just got an update from DPR – it’s opening tomorrow afternoon! (more…)

1336 U Street, NW

Yesterday we learned that Tabaq had closed for “major renovations” on U Street. Thanks to a commenter for sharing the link from the Cham Restaurant Group announcing Borka Kitchen and Bar (Opening Summer 2013):

Borka kitchen & bar, will primarily serve modern American comfort food. Located in the heart of the vibrant 14th & U St. corridor. “Borka” translated “coming together” in the native language of wollof from The Gambia, West Africa. Chef / Owner Howsoon H.O. Cham delivers his home style of cooking using ingredients that are organically grown, sustainably produced and purchased from local farmers whenever possible.”

You can see their menu here.

And the Cham Restaurant Group also announces plans for a new restaurant for Truxton Circle:

The Truxton Kitchen & Wine Bar features a menu of Italian & Local Wines, inspired shared plates and speciality house cocktails. The menu emphasizes such cherished Italian staples as savory crostini, pastas, and cheeses. We use many different local and orgarnic farmers including produce from Mocks Green House and Coastal Produce. Our passionate and educated wine staff are eager to introduce you to your new favorite bottle and to expertly pair it with our food. The name Truxton Kitchen & Wine Bar derives its name from Truxton Circle which contains late 19th-century houses and historical schools, including Armstrong Manual Training School (where Duke Ellington received his high school diploma) and the original Dunbar High School, the first all-black public high school in the United States. The neighborhood is currently home to several parks and playgrounds, such as Truxton Park, which lies at the corner of First Street and Florida Avenue.”

And it looks like there are also plans for Mezcal “Mexican Small Plates” and Butcher Shoppe barbeque bistro – dates and locations TBD…

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know anything about Tabaq on U st being closed? The last time I was there one month ago, I was told it was sold to someone else. I emailed them a couple of weeks ago to have an event there and I was told it is closedAny idea what is going on there?”

Washington Business Journal reported:

“According to the property sales records, the Cham Restaurant Group, based in Silver Spring, bought the property for $4 million in late July. The Cham Restaurant Group is led by chef Howsoon “H.O.” Cham, the Gambia-born D.C. chef who previously owned Red Ginger restaurant in Georgetown and the French-Caribbean Cafe Tropé in Dupont Circle, both of which are now closed.”

And this sign was just posted:

1830 14th Street, NW

Big news from the Washington Business Journal:

“The Amsterdam Falafelshop at 1830 14th St. NW will be the first franchise of the original Adams Morgan spot for late-night eats, according to Josh Miller of Pulse Property Group, who represented the tenants in the deal. Amsterdam Falafelshop’s other D.C. location is at 2425 18th St. NW.”

1830 14th Street, NW was formerly home to the Arts@1830 gallery which closed in Dec. 2012 and before that was home to the L and N thrift store.

I think Amsterdam Falafel will do phenomenal here (just a block away from the recently opened Ted’s Bulletin.) WBJ also reports that this location plans on serving Dutch beers too – stay tuned.

true_reformer_mural_missing_u_street

Back in May 2012 the iconic Duke Ellington mural was removed from the True Reformer building at 12th and U St, NW. At that time the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities issued a press release saying:

“Two weeks ago, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities took the first steps in restoring the famous G. Byron Peck mural of Duke Ellington on the True Reformer Building (1200 U Street, NW) to its original condition.

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities hired the fine arts services company, ARTEX, to remove, store and prep the mural for damage assessment. Restoration of the mural may take up to one year.”

An email sent to the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities asking for an update was not returned. Hopefully the great artwork by G. Byron Peck will be fully restored soon.
