Dear PoPville,

Last summer I read a few stories about Garden State, an outdoor bar (a la Standard) aiming to open on New Jersey Ave near Q St NW. This would be such an amazing addition to the neighborhood. Have you heard any news on whether the proprietor is still planning/aiming to move forward? I would go! Frequently!!

I’m sorry to say that an outdoor beer garden is not coming to New Jersey and Q St, NW in Truxton Circle. I stopped by over the weekend and the space has become 2nd Time Around selling clothes, furniture, and other household items. Soon they will be offering consignment sales as well. Also in the future they plan on having regular flea market rentals for the outdoor space.

Thanks to @JRogers202 for tweeting us the update:

post on Chapman Stables in #TruxtonCircle – it is now in the DC Inventory of Historic Sites – no razing”

From the Historic Preservation Review Board:

After careful consideration, the Historic Preservation Office recommends that the Board revise the boundaries of the proposed landmark application to include only the garage and stable building at 37-57 N Street, NW on Square 617 Lot 215, and that the Board designate the building a Historic Landmark to be entered into the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites. Staff recommends that the Board forward the nomination to the National Register with the identified revised boundaries. Staff further recommends that the property name be Chapman Coal Company Stable and Garage to more fully reflect the history of the property.

Dear PoPville,

Remember the former Brass Knob warehouse on N street NW in Truxton Circle? It still has signs advertising the space for lease, but I noticed in the window an application for a raze permit (attached). I found more details on the Office of Planning’s website, on the 3rd page here. That application was dated January 8, 2013. What’s interesting is that in OP’s Historic Preservation office, there’s an application for the same property, for a Historic Landmark Designation, dated January 11, 2013. Apparently the warehouse is Chapman Stables, built in 1890. I’m wondering what’s going to happen now. The owner must think the property is more valuable as an empty lot…

We last spoke about the former Brass Knob Warehouse back in April when I heard it sold for $4 million.

Dear PoPville,

I’m writing to inform you that a friend and I were attacked last night, Sunday, January 13, 2013 at approximately 5:50 p.m. by a young adult male on a bike. We were walking to Beau Thai. As soon as we crossed third street on to Q, we heard the young male and his friends who were all hanging out at the church nearby yelling “fags.” We ignored them and kept walking on the sidewalk down Q st. Then, one of the kids – a young black male (mini afro, mid-dark brown complexion, a tight smooth face, and a black jacket) – rode his bike passed us and repeated “fags” again.

Then, he put his bike on the sidewalk and turned it around so he was facing us. He rode his bike at full speed into us. Then, he got off his bike, and hit my friend from behind. I tried to deescalate things by saying everything is ok, and we should all stay calm. The young male then walked towards me and hit me in the left jaw. His friends, a block away at the church, yelled at him to return to them. Then all left in a hurry. The police were called on, and came quickly to respond and take our statements. The Gay and Lesbian Liason Unit also arrived on the scene, and we are working to catch the young man.
