This odd mural is located on the side of the Steak ‘n Egg Kitchen located on Wisconsin Ave just north of Tenleytown. What’s even more bizarre is that it is located right next to a big Obama mural?

The “I don’t speak English” seems to be a part of the original work and not just graffiti. Or do you think it is graffiti? What am I missing here? This is bizarre, right?

The scuttlebutt from Dec. has been confirmed. A press release says that Pete’s second location will be located at 4940 Wisconsin Ave, NW at the corner of Fessenden (halfway between Tenleytown and Friendship Heights). The store will be 3,400 square feet and can seat up to 100 people. The space is expected to open in April and like the Columbia Heights location will serve wine and beer. In the warm weather there will be outdoor seating as well. Looks like a great spot.

Red Rocks (11th and Park) and Pete’s Apizza (14th and Irving) are two super popular pizza spots in Columbia Heights. Washingtonian broke the news on Red Rocks’ expansion yesterday:

“The beloved Columbia Heights restaurant RedRocks is opening a second location of its wood-oven-fire pizza joint. The owners just signed a lease on a space on the 900 block of King Street, right across the street from the Majestic.”

I was holding off writing about Pete’s Apizza because there are a few details still being wrapped up. But since word is spreading of pizza expansions I thought I’d share some scuttlebutt. While this is not 100% sealed yet I’m hearing that Pete’s would like to open two more locations. Speculation is that one could be in Clarendon and one on Wisconsin Ave. I’ll update with exact addresses as info becomes available.

I’m a fan of both spots but since we’re talking about them – I have to ask – do you have a favorite between the two?

As I went here for grad school, I was blown away by the building. When I went there it was like a high school building from the 50s. This looks like an amazing improvement. Also it looks like they did a pretty good job matching the rendering:

Do you like the style?

The following is a first hand account of the fire Wed. night at the Cooper Cafritz Mansion in the 3000 block of Chain Bridge Road NW, as witnessed by Michael Kuna a student at American University.

Its almost 8:30pm and the smell of smoke is in the air. I walk north on the quad when turning back I see a plume of smoke coming from behind the tree line of the American University campus. Jumping into a car, I realize I’ve never heard this many sirens blaring at once, as a fire truck tears down Nebraska Avenue NW, adjacent to the campus. As I continue down Nebraska and peer to my right the smoke surges from above the trees.

A cop shoots past us and blockades the entrance to Chain Bridge Rd. NW. Looking down the road there is a train of flashing white and red lights. We bear left; I am in the car with fellow AU student Chris Toth, onto University Terrace NW, this street runs behind Chain Bridge Rd. Two deer, a larger 4-point and a doe run along side the street as if to run from the blaze in a Bambi-esque fashion. To our dismay I slowly start to realize that this is the home of Peggy Cooper Cayfritz: DC activist and founder of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

I see from the back of the property, that’s pours over onto University Terrace, one of DC’s largest homes up in flames. If the word firewall could capture any moment it would be this one. Residents from the neighborhood feverishly leave their doors, with confused looks, to see the fire. Fire trucks are still arriving on the scene and ambulances tear through the crowds with loud sirens. The crackle of the ember has shot chills through the bodies of everyone in sight. Onlookers can only fear for property surrounding the blaze as the trees of the estate bend and seem to carry an orange tint. The fire burns in the reflective windows of the houses across the street. Small embers rise with the wind like stars moving over the treetops under the half moon. We walk back up Nebraska Avenue to see blockades in the road and redirected traffic.

Fire trucks from Petworth and Glen Echo have now arrived as the firefighting units mobilize at the bottom of the street. With no questions or opposition we continue up Chain Bridge to walk past the long line of fire department vehicles, trucks and ambulances. Again residents, struck with fear and worrying for the Cayfritz home are talking and looking on into the fiery blaze. I hear a man from a neighboring home discuss the water pressure in the area. Still water oozes from the fire hoses and hydrants illuminated by the blaze and flashing lights, by the time hoses were in place and hoses pressurized, the house had been engulfed. Smoke has filled the street and works its way into the surrounding area.

An unknown lady is lying on a stretcher out into the street. From a distance she seems responsive to her tending paramedic but her identity will remain unknown to me as a policeman tells me to back up or the pressurized hose between my feet might carry me as high as the flames. As the neighbors move out, cameras start to roll in. It seems they’ve missed a good portion of the fire. Its close to 9:30 now, I hear voices as we walk back to Nebraska Avenue, something about a friend having dinner at the house tonight or nearby. Rolling back into Tenleytown one could still smell the smoke more than 2 miles from the blaze, my neighbors in the area already had firemen at her house on complaint of smoke in the air. It seems the weight of the situation is felt miles away from the blaze.

Perhaps it won’t be as stark with some landscaping but the new Kogod School of Business building at AU, is well, a bit imposing.

Personally I think the Katzen Arts building is way cooler.

What do you think – thumbs up or down?

This building (4400 Masschusetts Ave, NW) knocked my socks off. I liked it so much when I was in the area last week that I walked all the way back there from Petworth. It was well worth the effort. Sadly, my camera couldn’t get the whole building in one shot so I had to take a few which doesn’t do it perfect justice but you can a feel for it.

What do you think of the style? Anyone check out the art?

After the jump I also ran into hundreds of folks walking (I think) to combat breast cancer. (more…)

Cafe Ole is located at 4000 Wisconsin Ave. (across the street from the great Filipino-Japanese Market I featured yesterday). They say they are known for having over 30 different Mezze/tapas from all over the Mediterranean. I used to hit this spot occasionally before going to the movie theater located near by but I think that movie theater closed, right? I seem to recall the food was pretty good. You can see the menu here. Any fans out there?

I guess I should first note how funny the NBC building is up on Nebraska Ave. I think it looks exactly like a high school. And on the inside it even has some pea green tiles to complete the homage. I’m sure it was dope sky in 1957.

But anyway, on to the mystery. So I got to discover something that was way cooler than all the Meet the Press history. I saw the local news studio. And I always wondered what type of chairs the anchors sat on. I was shocked to learn that they sit on pretty crummy stools. Actually stools that, fittingly, look like they were taken from a high school art class. Each anchor has their own stool and they’re all lined up in a row. I, sadly, was unable to find the great Lindsay Czarniak’s but I did find the great Jim Vance’s.
