Steve writes about the above: “I found a chunk of Himalayan sea salt with a nice form fitting canvas carrying case in the alley behind my house in Shaw the other day. Go figure!”

And Elizabeth finds the gem below this morning, also from Shaw: (more…)

Thanks to Kip for reporting:

“Heads up there were at least 6-8 shots fired this morning on 8th street between S and T st. One block from the north entrance to the Shaw Howard metro. Police are investigating. No reports of injuries yet but multiple shell casings have been found.”

Thanks to a reader for passing on from Dino’s Grotto:

“After 14 Years…
It’s Time to Move On

It’s been a great run and we have had so much fun getting to know you all!

The Grotto, and Dino before, have been a labor of love. But now Kay and I need to move on to a new phase in our life. Owning a small independent restaurant is a life in itself. But now I need to retire from this life and enjoy the next phase of my life.

We are working with our landlords on transitioning out of the Grotto. We will operate the restaurant until mid September but that could change and we might close earlier if the new tenants want to move faster. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to send along a frustrating saga of a developer getting its way by blocking roads in my neighborhood daily.

The condo construction site, at 6th and Wiltberger Streets NW, constantly blocks the entire width of Wiltberger. This means traffic — or if an emergency happens, first responders — can’t get through for the entire block. This has been happening daily, and the portable crane that lifts drywall and other materials into the new nearby condos have no permits, per DDOT’s searchable tool. (more…)

Last week a reader wrote in warning “A quintessential DC restaurant is close to closing”. The next day on the Cleveland Park listserv ar resident wrote:

“Dino’s is closing sometime in September. Dean made the decision to close in part because the business is struggling and in part because of his health. The food is still good, so stop by this summer.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am writing to you to get some help to save Dino’s Grotto! This family owned DC restaurant makes the best farm to table Italian dishes in the city and boast an impressive wine menu! Unfortunately they are having trouble competing with big name chefs and restaurants. They are the go to Italian restaurant in Shaw/Logan circle and continually feature fresh seasonal farm ingredients in every dish. The owner Dean goes out of his way to travel to farms for locally sourced meat and vegetables while simultaneously maintaining relationships with Italian vinters to get great deals on rate Italian wines. “Dear PoPville,

I took these photos this afternoon from the corner of Florida Avenue and W Street NW (across from the future Whole Foods). Any idea what this will be?”

This is the former home to Darnell’s/Blind Dog Cafe/Mocha Lounge. I feel like I remember posting that this was going to become a nail salon but I can’t find the post. Does that sound familiar to you guys?
