Dear PoPville,

Thought on such a cold day news of springtime sidewalk cafes would be welcome. While picking up carryout, the owner of the delicious and appropriately-rave-Yelp-reviewed Red Toque at 6th and R NW mentioned that he had been working with the ANC to get permits to fix-up the side-yard into outdoor seating. I have always thought this little tree-shaded yard would make an excellent outdoor dining area – and w/ Beau Thai relatively recently opening their outdoor dining this little stretch of R street in Shaw could be quite nice in the spring.

Red Toque is located at 6th and R St, NW.

Per the disclaimer at the very top of this post, I am hereby disclosing that the listing agent, Jason Martin, is a colleague affiliated with Keller Williams Capital Properties. Jason was kind enough to share that the property attracted over twenty offers within a short time of being put on the market. Pam Wye, with TTR Sothebys represented the purchaser. I wasn’t able to reach Pam before the holidays for any comment on the buyer’s plans, so hopefully she’ll pop in to comment.

Rather than a typical house or condo sale, this property was marketed as a multi-unit building with two apartments plus a church on the first level. Many commenters on the original post stopped in to say nice things about the long time owner, Pastor Sutton. Thanks to commenter Joel for posting this link to photos of a worship service at the church.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

Dear PoPville,

A question that has been nagging at me: there is what appears to be an Asian grocery 1332 9th St, between N & O, called “Winner Co.” I imagine you’re familiar with it, but a view is here. Over the past six months, I’ve tried to stop in three or four times, but every time (after trying to buzz in — per the instruction found here), I’ve been told that they they are closed. I’ve tried middle of the day on weekends, around 6.30 pm on weekdays, and the result has been the same. Is this actually a store? A wholesaler? A front?

I went in a few months ago and didn’t really find anything to my taste. But it def. had items for sale – like dried fish and a variety of sundries. There was a very elderly couple in the store. Anyone know if they’ve closed?

City Paper shares the goods this morning:

“The previous owner couldn’t handle it, so I’m taking over,” says Siya Sadeghi, introducing himself as the new face of embattled booze-less boîte Shaw’s Tavern during a meeting of the local ANC2c on Wednesday night…

Sadeghi rattled off a number of prior eateries that he’s worked on in D.C., primarily as a builder, including Tabaq on U Street and Haydee’s in Mount Pleasant. But only one he’s ever owned: the former Axis on U.

You can follow the saga of Shaw’s Tavern, located at 520 Florida Ave, NW which closed in Aug. 11, here.

Were there any fans of the former Axis? Axis was located at 1340 U St, NW and is now the home to Bistro La Bonne.

Sad news for Shaw this weekend. Just a couple of weeks ago we judged Taqueria Mexicana to very positive reviews. Taqueria Mexicana was located in the former Cafe Eagle and former Vegetate space at 1414 9th St, NW. I happened to run into the owner who was on a delivery and he told me that he had to close because the rent was simply too high. He’s gonna look for a new location but he is not 100% sure he will reopen. He may continue as a caterer and in the short term will provide catering on weekends.

“Dear PoPville,

Ken’s Carryout now offers Bulgogi. Not traditional Bulgogi, but good price, ingredients seem fresh and the rice was perfectly cooked.”

Back in Aug. ’11 we learned that Ken’s Carryout was becoming an Arthur Treacher’s at 400 Florida Ave, NW. Anyone try the Bulgogi?
