6th and Florida Ave, NW

“Dear PoPville,

As we were leaving Shaw’s Tavern we witnessed a very scary car crash on Florida Ave. As you can see in the photos, the driver flipped his car after crashing into the back of another vehicle. A young woman was crying and saying she was in shock since she had been hit by the driver. Miraculously there were no injuries that I could see.”

Uprising Muffin Company will be located at 1817 7th Street, NW right by the Shaw metro and the recently opened Solidcore gym (and opening soon Fishnet restaurant).  Their website says:

Four years in the making, Uprising Muffin Company was raised on the belief that food should be simple, fresh and above all, seriously delicious. That’s why every muffin we make for you starts from scratch with 10 ingredients or less, no preservatives, no artificial colors, nothing you can’t pronounce. Sure, preservatives mean food can sit on a shelf longer, but we don’t believe food was meant to last forever.

If our muffin isn’t in your hands today, it’s being donated to someone less fortunate and fresh muffins will be ready for you tomorrow.
Local Buzz & Fresh Eats

Our coffee is locally roasted in small batches, so it couldn’t be any fresher. Milk for our lattes comes from respectfully raised local cows and our sandwiches and salads are prepared fresh each day with local ingredients whenever they’re available.

The perfect place to meet up with some old friends, make some new ones, or take advantage of free wifi while nibblin’ a hearty muffin and sippin’ a drip, Uprising is Shaw’s newest place away from home and the hustle and bustle.

Check out their menu here.

2100 Vermont Ave, NW

Update on this prime space from the invaluable Short Articles about Long Meetings (SALM):

“Richard Foster Architects has proposed a design for a six-story mixed-use building at 2100 Vermont Avenue NW. It would contain 19 rental units of between 430 and 716 square feet apiece. There will be no parking spaces. Residents will promise not to seek an on-street resident parking permit as a condition of their lease.

The ground floor would have room for 2,100 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, with doorways facing both V Street and Vermont Avenue.”

Though SALM also reports that ANC1B’s Design Review Committee did not like the initial design. Updates when/if they submit a redesign and/or they pass their Board of Zoning Adjustment.

Full details on the meeting here.

We’ve been watching this former Horse’s ass award nominee since 2011.

“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering if anyone knows what the status is for the Garrison Elementary School field (the field runs along Vermont Ave NW and R St. NW). In the fall, I believe it was DPR who came and tore down those ugly blue structures that were allegedly for an old pool. The area around that old pool area has been fenced off since the fall. I heard rumors of the space being made into a park, but that was not a reliable source. Anyone have any ideas?”

Good word from the owners of Rito Loco coming to the 600 block of Florida Ave by the Howard Theatre:

“We obtained our Zoning approval from the DC Zoning Committee yesterday!!! We hope to have our building permits in the next two weeks and start construction asap!!!”

Though the sign says opening in Summer 2014, if all goes well they hope to open on Cinco de Mayo opening depending on how construction goes.  You can see their food truck menu here.

District Flea was a pretty sweet addition last year:

“A collaboration between local vendors and the people that started the Brooklyn Flea, our market will feature antique and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art, and crafts by artisans from in and around DC, New York, Baltimore, and Philly.”

They’re coming back to 945 Florida Ave, NW by the 9:30 Club on April 5th:

“Opening day is April 5th, and we’ll be running every Saturday after that throughout the spring, summer, and fall. So if you’d like to join our lineup of incredible food vendors, mark your calendars and fill out the application at www.districtflea.com/sell.”

And this time again they’ll have beer – they’ve just applied for a liquor license!

Future home of The American at 1209 – 1213 10th Street, NW (actually in Blagden Alley)

Thanks to a reader for sending word about these renderings for two new project coming to Blagden Alley near the Convention Center. We first learned about plans for The American back in July of last year. The description OdC Studios & Interiors says:

“With the American, we are bringing the concept of the family restaurant and the neighborhood bar to literally the backyards of the homes of the neighborhood, and most of its neighbors can just do that, they can take a stroll through the alley, and enjoy a craft beer or a hearty dish.”

Previously we’ve learned that Cleveland Park’s Dino would be opening up in Shaw “in the vicinity of 9th and U Sts NW”. It’s been killing me trying to figure out exactly which space. On Monday Dino’s Grotto owner sends word:

We now have the keys to the new space and the redecorating starts tomorrow. It will be a quick turnaround. This is a very exciting process as the ideas we have had for a while now are put into place. It is also odd as we are doing almost nothing to the place except clean, do minor repairs, redecorate with paint, removing a lot of mirrors and disco lights, and finally moving in our furniture and equipment.

Dino’s Last Dance!

Our last night of full service with a full menu is February 23. But we will still have food in house. So we thought, why not throw a farewell party. We will just cook food ’til it’s all gone! It’s going to be more of a cocktail party with lots of food served buffet style. Some of the tables will already be gone. We will have a cash bar for beer, booze and vino. One last night to have fun. Tickets only on EventBrite. Admission at the door only if space is available. You will only be guaranteed admission if you pre-buy your ticket on Eventbrite {just hit the link below!} There will be no reservations, no assigned seating, no menus, no special requests. There will be a lot of pasta, sliced meats, prosciutto and cheeses, veggies, etc. We will just bring out food and serve you one last time! It starts at 5:30 and we will start giving you dirty looks at 9:30.

Ok “removing a lot of mirrors and disco lights” from a space in the vicinity of 9th and U St, NW – where the hell could that be? First I was thinking the former Philanthropub space but I don’t recall if they have a lot of mirrors and disco lights? I also thought the former Vegetate space, and many other subsequent incarnations at 1414 9th St, NW would be possible but that seems to far south to be considered the “vicinity of 9th and U.” So what do you guys think – what space has lots of mirrors and disco lights and has become vacant around 9th and U?

Update from a press release:

“Chef Owner Dean Gold of DINO Restaurant and Enoteca in DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood is moving his beloved Italian restaurant across town this spring to the Shaw neighborhood into a row house on 9th St NW, just below U St. The two-story rustic Italian restaurant will be renamed DINO’S GROTTO, and is expected to open before the end of April.

The new establishment will serve approximately 120 people on two floors. The lower level will feature a large communal table alongside a 14 person bar, and table seating for 45. The 1st floor will also feature a 10 person bar and table seating for 50.

A strong believer in “sustainable foods”, Chef Dean Gold’s Italian pastas and dishes are handmade daily of fresh ingredients from local and organic farms, and sustainable fishers & butchers. Dino’s Grotto will also feature local craft brews as well as artisan Italian beers and ciders on tap, and creative cocktails at the hands of master mixologists.
