715 Florida Ave, NW

Looks like we finally have some action at 715 Florida Ave, NW (a once planned for coffee house and bar that never worked out.) A reader writes:

“Here’s another from the “cool old building being reno’d for a restaurant” file: 715 Florida Ave, NW. Walked by this weekend and noticed lots of work being done, including the addition of what looks like another level or a roof terrace. And I just looked it up here and saw that they had their zoning review approved back in January for a “new 4270 sq. ft. full service restaurant on c2b district. seating 112 total occupancy 158. first floor bar seating 17 – dining 26. upper floor (terrace) bar seating 23 – dining 46.

Would love to know more about what’s planned.”

Anyone hear anything?

Ok the recent weather got me a bit impatient about Dacha’s expansion. Fortunately their facebook update for Sunday says:

“#‎teamdacha‬ is happy to report that renovations are going as planned with almost no delays. New bathrooms, new canopy, new bar, new kitchen – these are just some of the new features to look for. If all goes as planned, and the weather cooperates, Dacha will welcome you and your loved ones in March.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share that on Wednesday evening at about 6.05pm, I was walking past the intersection of 5th and R NW in Shaw when a black male, about 5’10”, walked by me and grabbed my butt. I turned around and shouted at him, but he kept walking down the street, never reacting, as if nothing happened. About two blocks later I passed a police car and ended up reporting it. I spoke to about six different officers and eventually a sex crimes unit detective over the course of about an hour-all were very professional and kind. The detective opened an investigation and said she would see if there were any video cameras that captured what happened.

Just another reality check that there are crazy people out there with zero regard for basic humanity, but it was reassuring that the police officers in my neighborhood all took the situation, and myself, very seriously.”

A reader writes:

“The SE corner of 5th and P St NW. They haven’t shoveled it at ALL during any of the storms. This is across the street from an elementary school. I saw two kids fall yesterday. Requests to DPW for assistance in snow/ice removal informed me they can leave a note in a mailbox but will not take action or fine.”

“Dear PoPville,

This corner (5th and Q) used to belong to a house with an attached, street-facing garage — a major rarity in the area. (it also used to be the epicenter of a local gang turf war! fun facts!) The developers originally won permission to build 8 units, as I recall, but instead built 4 luxury spaces — and, as you can see, are trying to sell them for nearly $1.5 million each! Ed. Note: You can see a virtual tour here.

I guess my question is: who is this for? Some foreign potentate’s children studying at Georgetown Law? Are Russian oligarchs running out of Manhattan and London apartments to buy up? Is there a market, in Shaw, for apartment-homes that cost this much? The list price has many of us in the neighborhood scratching our heads.”
