This Saturday, thanks to the leadership of Kevin Hummons, one Petworth alley is clean and many neighbors got to experience the true meaning of community. At 10:45 am about 14 Petworth residents got together to clean up an alley between 4th St. and Illinois Ave. NW. Now, this was not a casual pick up a can and call it a day clean up. This was a mud in your face, grit in your teeth clean up of all clean ups. There was raking, bagging, shoveling, clipping, pruning and even a little laughter. Mind you, this was Saturday, which was about 90+ degrees in the shade. It was so hot, my wallet actually melted in my jeans. Melted. Ok, you may ask why was I wearing jeans in 90+ degree weather? Well, my legs are not very flattering in shorts but that is beside the point.

The beautiful thing was not that this alley got clean. Don’t get me wrong that was a nice outcome but the beauty was watching neighbors come together. This group was truly representative of Petworth. There were old timers, new comers, white, black, men, women, and even a teenager. I know I hadn’t met many of these neighbors before so it was such a pleasure to bond with them while working together towards cleaning up our community. It was hot and it was dirty but I had a smile on my face the whole rest of the day. So again, a big thank you to Kevin and all the neighbors who participated.

I know we have had the bus/metro debate before but I have recently noticed the prime spots zip car and flex car have on Upshur near Domku. So my question is does anyone use zip car or flex car? Which is better? I saw that zip car was represented by a nice Toyota corolla while flex had a slightly more stylish Toyota matrix. How did they get such a sweet permanent parking spot? I have to admit, as a driver, it upsets me when I’m looking for parking spots and these two prime spots are permanently taken.

Bonus question of the day: Is jaywalking a serious problem in Petworth? Now, I jaywalk like the best of them but the difference between me and other jaywalkers I see in Petworth is that I don’t cross when I see cars, or if I see a car I run to get to the other side. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people jaywalking, as though they were perfectly in the right, and nonchalantly cross New Hampshire or Georgia Ave, cars be damned. First of all it seems quite dangerous. Second of all it is quite annoying for drivers. Is this behavior related to our notorious double parking problem?

Just thought this was a nice picture of St. Gabriel’s located on Grant Circle.

I walked by some construction just a few stores down from Domku and I have to say it looks really nice inside. You would never guess it looks that nice on the inside from just walking by. Does anyone know what it is going to be? Another restaurant perhaps?

This announcement was posted on an apartment building on New Hampshire Ave. I thought it was very touching. Clearly he was very well loved.

Similarly, I have also noticed a number of congratulatory posters for recent graduates in front of some row houses.

Just two examples demonstrating the strong community existing in Petworth.

This is a mock up of the what the new condos being built over the Petworth metro are supposed to look like. And I am just having a very difficult time imagining it. Believe me, I hope it looks like this and with the Great Streets Initiative maybe it will but it just seems so foreign. I’m crossing my fingers.

So my question to you is: Do you really think the new condos being built over the metro are going to look like this?

Bonus question: I know there is a Mocha Hut coffee shop going in (which is sweet) but what other retail is going in or what other retail would you like to see go in?

Domku has followed El Torogoz’s footsteps with a lovely outdoor eating area. You can see this group of fine Petworthians are enjoying their Sunday Brunch in the sun. There are about 4 or 5 tables and it is really quite pleasant. The only drawback is that you can’t hear the fantastic music that usually plays on the inside. But that is a small price to pay for fine outdoor dining.

Another wild statue from the Rock Creek Church Cemetery. Ok, it freaks me out a little bit…
