From MPD:
“A citizen reports he was waiting for a ride at the bus stop at Georgia and New Hampshire Ave. NW, at approximate 630 AM, this morning [Saturday] when he was approached by five male subjects. The subjects punched him about his body and held him down and removed his shoes, wallet and cell phone from his possession. A Fourth District MPD Officer, Clinton Brown was driving by on patrol as the suspects ran across the street and boarded a Metro bus. A lookout was given by other officers in the field as the bus went south bound on Georgia Avenue. The bus was stopped by MPD and Metro Transit Officers. The suspects were removed from the bus and a show up was conducted. The citizen made a positive Identification of the five suspects who robbed him. All five were arrested and the shoes were recovered from the bus. All Five are charged with Robbery, Force and Violence.
Great collaboration between the members of the Metropolitan Police Department, the Detective’s Office and the Metro Transit Police with arresting and removing five young robbers from the streets of the Fourth District. Good work by all!!”

Back in March we noted the ribbon cutting the new indoor addition to the Raymond Rec Center located at 10th and Spring Rd, NW. Now check out the incredible outdoor renovations:

Check out some more photos of the features after the jump. (more…)

A beauty from New Hampshire Ave just south of Grant Circle.

So it ain’t The Palm but the prices are great! La Joya Steak House is located in the former El Limeno space across from Hitching Post by the Old Soldier’s Home.

809-811 Otis Place, NW
Well this the greatest name for a pair of buildings I’ve ever seen. The Otis was a former dilapidated shell for as long as I can remember. Now the Otis website says:
“1 Bedroom homes from the mid-$200’s Why rent when you can afford to own? Available Summer 2013”

Facing the El Haynes school and Georgia Ave
And another long vacant dilapidated building across the street will be called the Redding. Despite the possible accusations of swagger jacking, I think this is brilliant!

Here is the great Otis Redding:

4201 Georgia Ave, NW
A reader writes:
“So the people who were renting 4201 Georgia vacated and I was trying to see if they were going to rent it again. Anyway, I tracked down the owners and they said the building was for sale and under contract.
Anyway… hoping somebody good bought it and something awesome goes in there. It is such a cool building….”
This could be huge. Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,
Has anyone inquired about the constant clump of loiterers outside the Petworth metro station within the past few months? It’s gotten pretty bad, and now they’re smoking weed in broad daylight. There never seems to be any police presence there and quite frankly my concern is that it’s going to take a mugging or something to bring awareness rather than stepping it up and taking care of the issue before it happens.
In addition to the blatant disregard for the area during the day, I’ve also witnessed prostitutes right outside the subway after midnight on the weekends. I’m all for this neighborhood taking a turn for the better and it appeared as tho it was. Now I’m not so sure since it doesn’t seem like anyone is really monitoring things.”

“Dear PoPville,
I had a tour here today. Here is a sneak preview of the new pet store coming up in Petworth. Projected opening day August 24th, 2013. Here are some of the cool things they offer:
Pet food/ they do delivery.
Pet accessories
Self Dog wash
Private Dog park in the back for their Loyal customers.
Grooming.
Dog walk.
Great addition to Petworth.”
Ed. Note: This is located right next door to Epiphany Open Pit Beef & Subs near the YES! Organic Market.

3622 Georgia Ave, NW
In April a reader shared some scuttlebutt that a cigar store could be coming to 3622 Georgia Ave, NW next to Lion’s. Haven’t heard anything else on that front but on Sunday I did notice a permit posted for retail sales. But what could be more interesting is the agent name – Tony Shallal. Tony has confirmed via email that he is the brother of Andy Shallal owner of Busboys and Poets. Regarding plans for the space, he writes:
“We are still in the talking stage with several people, retailers, restaurants and nonprofits. The space will have 3600 sq/ft with an upper level outdoor deck, and exposed brick walls. It should be a cool space for a cool tenant.”

Whatever happens, it is nice to see the rundown space finally get fixed up.
