“So the people who were renting 4201 Georgia vacated and I was trying to see if they were going to rent it again. Anyway, I tracked down the owners and they said the building was for sale and under contract.
Anyway… hoping somebody good bought it and something awesome goes in there. It is such a cool building….”

“Dear PoPville,
Has anyone inquired about the constant clump of loiterers outside the Petworth metro station within the past few months? It’s gotten pretty bad, and now they’re smoking weed in broad daylight. There never seems to be any police presence there and quite frankly my concern is that it’s going to take a mugging or something to bring awareness rather than stepping it up and taking care of the issue before it happens.
In addition to the blatant disregard for the area during the day, I’ve also witnessed prostitutes right outside the subway after midnight on the weekends. I’m all for this neighborhood taking a turn for the better and it appeared as tho it was. Now I’m not so sure since it doesn’t seem like anyone is really monitoring things.”

In April a reader shared some scuttlebutt that a cigar store could be coming to 3622 Georgia Ave, NW next to Lion’s. Haven’t heard anything else on that front but on Sunday I did notice a permit posted for retail sales. But what could be more interesting is the agent name – Tony Shallal. Tony has confirmed via email that he is the brother of Andy Shallal owner of Busboys and Poets. Regarding plans for the space, he writes:
“We are still in the talking stage with several people, retailers, restaurants and nonprofits. The space will have 3600 sq/ft with an upper level outdoor deck, and exposed brick walls. It should be a cool space for a cool tenant.”
Whatever happens, it is nice to see the rundown space finally get fixed up.

“Dear PoPville,
I stopped by the Washington Pizza on Randolph and 14 last night. Its under new ownership and they have an incredible deal of $5 for a large one topping pizza and a soda. The new owners are a little depressed about how slow business is. The pizza was great. Also, they will be opening the other side of it in a couple of weeks and will be selling the Indian food.”

“Petworth Citizen” is inspired by the community newspaper of the same name that chronicled Petworth neighborhood happenings from 1916 – 1951. “Petworth Citizen” will be a neighborhood bar (829 Upshur St, NW) with great bar food and a literary focus. The name also points to our intention to become a gathering place, welcoming neighbors from near and far.”

A couple weeks ago we noted that Hogo (1017 7th Street, NW) would be previewing the menu of the new restaurant (still to be named) from Paul Ruppert (Room 11 etc.):
The project is coming into focus as a neighborhood bar with great bar food and a literary focus. Our back room will host literary events – author readings, book launches, poetry slams, fundraisers for literacy programs, and a Free Book library. Our chef, Makoto Hamamura, was the Sous Chef at Cityzen and we will offer elevated bar food plus a beverage program similar in quality to Room 11 and the Passenger. We hope to open around Labor Day.

Thanks to a reader for sending the photo of the new Sandovan signage at 4809 Georgia Ave, NW. Back in June we learned RAS would be reopening under new management after abruptly closing in Dec. 2012. Stay tuned for Sandovan Restaurant and Lounge.
