829 Upshur Street, NW

A couple weeks ago we learned about the new restaurants coming to Upshur Street, the unnamed Japanese-French restaurant and Petworth Citizen, from Paul Ruppert of Room 11, The Passenger and more. At that time we heard he was shooting for an early October opening of Petworth Citizen. In what almost never happens – they are ahead of schedule and are soft opening tomorrow (Wed.) night! I was able to stop by for a preview and took tons of photos.

A couple things to note – they have their own smoker.

The reading room will be ready in about a month. In that room they will host literary events and have a free library on the walls.

Also, they have their own smoker. Also, I can’t freaking wait to try the brisket.

The menu is similar in style to Room 11’s in that it is not huge. But the items I had were delicious. I had the chorizo burger and potato fishcake fritters.

All I can say is, I’ve dreamed of this day for over 10 years.

Museum Minute is written by Elle O’Flaherty. Elle lives in Mt. Pleasant and previously wrote about the National Children’s Museum.

This Saturday, September 21st the good folks at President Lincoln’s Cottage will throw a Family Day celebration complete with tours of the cottage and make-your-own top hats (140 Rock Creek Church Rd./Upshur). The festivities will also include a civil war encampment, period stories, live music, and a military drill team. I went last year and not only did I learn a bit about Lincoln, but I got to pet a goat, too.

There was also pie. Yummy, yummy pie. The grounds have a gorgeous view of the city and, along with a tons of delicious food for sale, they’re cool with bringing your own picnic. On a more serious note, the current special exhibit “Can You Walk Away?” about modern human trafficking is excellent and worth seeing before it closes in December. Full disclosure, my friend curated the exhibit, but it really is thought provoking and you’ll probably need a hug afterwards. Or pie.

“The original Civil War diary and personal artifacts of Albert Nelson See, a member of Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Guard, will go on public display for the first time in history at President Lincoln’s Cottage this autumn. See’s eye-witness accounts detail President Lincoln’s life at the Cottage, Jubal Early’s attack on Washington at Fort Stevens, and the inner workings of the presidential guard. Visitors to the exhibit will discover an authentic perspective of Civil War life in Washington. The exhibit opens to the public on September 26th 2013 in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center at President Lincoln’s Cottage, and will remain on display until December 31st, 2013 [UPSHUR ST AT ROCK CREEK CHURCH RD, NW].

“When President Lincoln and his family resided at the Soldiers’ Home, they moved closer to the action of the Civil War,” says Erin Carlson Mast, Executive Director of President Lincoln’s Cottage. “From greeting wounded soldiers en route to Harewood Hospital, to witnessing growing numbers of contraband camps and military burials, Lincoln’s life at the Soldiers’ Home connected him profoundly to the stark realities of the Civil War. As a member of his presidential guard, See lived on the Soldiers’ Home grounds and bore witness to the Lincoln family’s daily life, as well as Civil War events such as the battle at Fort Stevens in the summer of 1864. Lincoln himself left only a few written records of his life at the Soldiers’ Home, and See’s narrative offers an invaluable window into that period.”

The Albert Nelson See Diary was a gift to President Lincoln’s Cottage from Ms. Betty Kessler, the great granddaughter of Albert Nelson See. Having been passed down through several generations of the See family before being donated to President Lincoln’s Cottage in December of 2009, the diary underwent significant conservation efforts. It is now being displayed to the public for the first time.”

“Dear PoPville,

Bad accident around 9 am. Eyewitness reported to me the driver was speeding, with engine gunned and no evidence of efforts to stop — no screeching or skid marks. Biker was thrown 7 feet in air and landed well behind car. Biker lost consciousness but had regained it and was moving limbs by the time ambulance left.”

Awesome to see the new Safeway start to rise on Georgia Ave. Soon it’ll be:

“Once completed, the new 62,000 square-foot facility will be the third largest Safeway in the city and replace the current store, which was built in 1963 and measures 21,250 square feet. The project will feature a full-service Safeway at street level with below grade parking on the first level solely for Safeway shoppers and the second level dedicated exclusively for the building’s residents.”

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what’s going on with the construction site at Shepherd and Georgia? The building on that corner was demolished earlier this summer, and all of the debris was removed. After that the construction equipment went away and now there’s just a big hole with no signs of new construction. Are there plans for a new building? Any idea when they will start building?”

The folks behind the project, PERS Development, tell me they are “looking to break ground in the next 30-45 days. We are excited and look forward to this great project. It’s going to be a cool building!” This will become the the Fahrenheit Condos.
