Uphsur Street is officially the shit, as we you used to say back in the 90s. Do people still say that? Anyway, Upshur Street is the shit. On the far end Slash Run opened – joining the Hitching Post on the east end and the 800 block now features Domku, Petworth Citzen, Upshur Street Books, Willow, Crane & Turtle, my barber shop and the coming soon Slim’s Diner, Timber Pizza and Twisted Horn. Now we can add a new spot from @ChefAlexMcCoy who tweeted the big news yesterday:

“Friends, honored to officially announce that Upshur St NW in Petworth will be home to our newest concept!#petworth”

McCoy is coming to the former China American Inn space which closed back in Jan. 2014 and was rumored to be an Ethiopian/International cafe. Now plans are even more exciting. The Washington City Paper reports:

“McCoy is taking the idea of the expat bars he encountered while traveling throughout Southeast Asia and opening one up at home.

McCoy’s menu will feature “authentic regional dishes” from throughout Southeast Asia, but also things like an Australian burger with sweet chili sauce, grilled pineapple, and pickled beet root.”

If all goes well standby for an October opening.

Ed. Note: That would be a miracle but the sooner the better!

Back in March we were saddened to learn that Sweet Mango Cafe had closed “until further notice” across from the Petworth Metro. Now they’re back – sorta – 3701 Jerk Station had a soft opening yesterday. I stopped in yesterday and the owner was so happy – he was giving away jerk chicken for free to celebrate. He told me the official opening is Tuesday and they hope to lease space here when the new development comes. On that front UrbanTurf reports a 21 unit building is coming:

“The 65-foot, five-story residential development will have one and two-bedroom residential units on floors two through five and there will be retail on the ground floor.”

The owner of 3701 Jerk Station (who wishes he named it DC Jerk Station but oh well) says he hopes to lease the retail space in the new development too. Stay tuned all around and in the meantime – enjoy some jerk chicken!

From MPD:

“OFFENSE: Robbery [1:45pm]
BLOCK: 1400 – 1499 BLOCK OF UPSHUR STREET NW

The victim was involved in a car accident and another person came to help him. While there, they were approached by (3) suspects that displayed handguns and demanded their property. The suspects are described as black, males, in their 20’s, skinny builds, one had short dread hair style, and the other two had short hair. They were wearing white t-shirts and blue jeans.”

And another reader sends this report from WTOP:

“Ben Fishel, the grandson of the late CBS broadcaster Andy Rooney, says he was walking home recently near 11th and V streets in Northwest on July 19 when he was grabbed from behind and slashed across his face on his front steps.”

Slim’s Diner can not open soon enough!! The District has been craving a real diner ever since the failed attempt by Capital City Diner which, hard to believe, shuttered way back in January 2012.

Please join me in supporting team hash browns.

A reader writes:

“86-year-old Petworth resident Sarah Wright enjoying a near-perfect, mid-summer afternoon in her secret garden. She and husband, Earl, 87, a retired Howard University employee, have tended to the organic garden for about 40 years. “But his health no longer allows for that,” she said Friday.”

Ed. Note: Hoping someone can take over the reins so Mr. and Mrs. Wright, and others, can continue to enjoy the garden for years to come.

Slash Run [201 Upshur Street, NW] “will have more hair metal than your average bar but we are music lovers of all genres and there is something for everyone in there.”

Thanks to all who sent links to the WAMU story:

“A planned renovation of a number of rowhouses in the Grant Circle area of Petworth has sparked a particularly virulent fight between a developer and a group of residents, prompting a $25 million lawsuit in which the developer says residents abused the city’s historic preservation process to delay permits he needed to renovate and expand the homes.

Individuals with knowledge of the situation in Grant Circle say that Woodruff and Wright had been concerned with Gross’s vision for 7 Grant Circle, the house next to theirs, after he laid out his plans to expand it and convert it to two condos. They claimed to D.C. regulators that they were never presented with proper plans for the project, nor did they sign off on Gross’s plan to expand the basement by digging down beyond the existing floor.

In his lawsuit, Gross denies claims that he did not provide plans to Woodruff and Wright as required by law. Still, the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs delayed permits for Gross’s expansion of 7 Grant Circle, and also issued a stop-work order for the property. No work has been done on the house since earlier this year.”

Ed. Note: I’m also hearing that folks are starting to see serious progress at the Filipino Restaurant, Bad Saint on 11th Street.

From an email:

“After a super popular pop-up at the Washington DC food incubator EatsPlace, Kalye is back! Kalye’s Filipino street food will be at the EatsPlace every Thursday, Friday, Saturday from August 7 through January 2016. To complete his visionary team and develop the original concept, Chef Red Garcia has brought Chef Paolo Eleazar to the kitchen. Kalye means street, and Garcia and Eleazar are bringing street food from the Philippines to Washington DC. Enjoy authentic Filipino food like pork belly barbeque, sisig (grilled and charred pork meat), crispy pata (braised and then deep fried pork), sizzling mushrooms, and chicken inasal (spice marinated crispy grilled wings).

Dinner will be served thurs/fri/sat from 5:30 – 10:00 PM, and the EatsPlace bar, The Drinkubator, will be open late and serve, among other drinks, Red Horse, San Miguel Light and holla-holla, our version of the shave ice dessert. Walk-ins are welcome, and no reservations. Catering is available because who doesn’t need sisig at their shindig? EatsPlace is located at 3607 Georgia Avenue NW, a block south of the Petworth metro.
