4th Annual Handmade Holiday Card Drive for residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement Home

“Its that time of year again! We are collecting handmade holiday cards for the residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement home here in DC. If you know an adult, office, child, daycare, or school that would be interested in making holiday cards to bring some joy to these individuals who have spent years or a lifetime in service to all of us, please spread the word and help us hand out a card to every retired soldier we can this holiday season. Last year we handed out over 600 hugely appreciated holiday cards from all over the country. The cards are delivered along with some hugs, singing and lots of holiday cheer.

I will be happy to pick up the cards you make or you may mail/ drop them at my home. The deadline for this small but meaningful way to help experience the joy of giving back in our own backyard is Friday, December 11th. In the event the number of cards exceeds the number of residents, all of the remaining art will be shipped to operation gratitude for placement in care packages of persons serving overseas. Please help spread the word and lets make this years card drive a success!

“Many of you will remember the community conversation about affordable housing at the redevelopment of the old Hebrew Home (1125 Spring Rd NW) last year. At the time, then-mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser facilitated a series of very public and transparent community meetings revealing an overwhelming consensus in support of affordable housing in the redeveloped property.

The result was a plan for the building to have 90% of its units be affordable, at a range from working class affordability to more middle-class affordable units, including some prioritized for seniors. You can see those plans here. These are units that would house people to work in our neighborhood restaurants, cafes, schools, grocery stores, barber shops, and more – valued members of our community. (more…)

“There were always drug dealers, but they have gotten more bold.”

“Dear PoPville,

Drug dealers hang out on Rock Creek Church Rd, across from the Georgia Ave Metro between Georgia Ave and 8th. It’s gotten really out of hand. They will sit on anyone’s front steps at any time of day or night and hang out, apparently waiting on buyers to meet them to exchange goods. I have had to say “excuse me” to young men sitting on my steps just so I can get into my house. When they know they’ve been seen, they will move, but just to another stoop. And they are often loud, carrying on conversations to the point that I have to close my window to sleep at night. It’s been getting worse in the past month. I have even had packages delivered to my house, stolen from my front steps. I have lived here for over a year and never had these issues until recently. There were always drug dealers, but they have gotten more bold.

I have alerted the cops to the issue of stolen packages, but nothing gets done. I want to know what else can be done. Are other folks having problems with this?”
