Bayou on Penn replaced by Alfred House Private Event Space and Music Venue

Well this is awkward I had no idea Bayou closed!?!?!! I mean I knew Bayou on the Hill had closed but holy smokes was I asleep at the wheel. Well, better late than never and here’s the deal on their replacement:

“As you may know, we closed Bayou back in May. However, we still have the space and we’ve renovated it into a gorgeous private event space we now call Alfred House. We are using it as a private event venue that people can rent out for private parties. We named Alfred House after Alfred Mullett, an American architect who designed the Old Executive Office Building, among other federal buildings in DC. He actually lived in the rowhouse where the venue is, so that’s how we came up with the name. A fully restored 1889 rowhouse, Alfred House offers a full kitchen, two bars, and a customizable space for any kind of event. With our preferred caterers and in-house party planners, the Alfred House is the perfect spot for social events, corporate gatherings, and wedding parties.

On the weekends, we’re also using the space as a live music venue, much like Bayou. (more…)

“Squash On Fire Launches Upper West Side Café” Check the Menu

“Squash On Fire‘s café, the Upper West Side Café has officially launched. The menu features fresh and healthy small plates, juices, coffees and handcrafted cocktails as well as grab and go items, ideal for a bite after your lesson or a post-work(out) happy hour!

If you’re not familiar with Squash On Fire, it is the first ever pay-as-you-go squash facility, which opened its doors in the West End neighborhood in May. The design driven facility boasts eight state-of-the-art courts, including two all glass showcase courts, a full service restaurant and bar, and some of the best coaching in the sport, with head coach Amir Wagih, the winner of 23 world championship titles as coach, at the helm.

“I hope this motivates elected officials — and all of us — to do more for our homeless.”

“Dear PoPville,

As I was waking past the dog park on 25th and M around 7:15 last night, I came across the unfortunate sight of the DC medical examiner’s van backed up to a port-a-potty (incidentally it was a Don’s John). As I passed, I caught a glimpse of a gurney being wheeled toward the open door of a port-a-potty. There were also 8 or so uniformed and plainclothes cops, as well as techs. I obviously don’t know details, but I feel for the poor person who passed away (or was dumped) in a port-a-potty. I know it’s speculation at this point, but if what I suspect is true and a homeless person passed away in a port-a-potty, I hope this motivates elected officials — and all of us — to do more for our homeless.”

“Trader Joe’s at 25th & L NW is closed because their business license expired today and they’re waiting for the new one to come in. A very apologetic employee was standing out front telling people. Seems avoidable. Sounded like they were hoping it would come in today; the employee I spoke with said it was temporary.”

Streets of Washington Presents – The Columbia Hospital, caring for Washington women

The 100-year-old former Columbia Hospital for Women as it appears today (photo by the author).

The Columbia Hospital for Women and Lying-in Asylum was founded in June 1866 as a “hospital and dispensary for the treatment of diseases peculiar to women, and a lying-in asylum [maternity hospital], in which those unable to pay therefor shall be furnished with board, lodging, medicine, and medical attendance gratuitously.” Located at 25th and M Streets NW, just off of Pennsylvania Avenue, the hospital finally closed its doors in June 2002, ending an eventful 136-year history of serving Washington women from all walks of life.

Hospitals in the 19th century were charitable institutions that supported those who could not afford to have doctors visit them in their homes. Washington at the dawn of the Civil War had virtually none, aside from the recently-founded Saint Elizabeths asylum for the mentally ill in Southeast. Providence Hospital on Capitol Hill, organized by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul (and profiled in Lost Washington, DC), was the first general public hospital, but it took in mostly war-related cases and could accommodate very few D.C. residents.
