From a press release:

“Red Bear Brewing Company started construction this week on its future home at the District’s historic Uline Arena building. The brewery is partnering with 3877, a D.C. design studio, and McLean, Va.’s PWC Builders for the project. The site, which sits adjacent to the REI flagship store at Uline, totals ~7,000 square feet and will include a brewery, kitchen, taproom, and event space.

“We will be able to pack in up to 300 thirsty craft-beer patrons, board game enthusiasts, drag queens, NoMa locals, and happy-hour hunters,” said Bryan Van Den Oever, one of the brewery’s three co-founders. (more…)

From MPD:

“We have a confirmed shooting, a crime scene was located in the area of # 2 Massachusetts Avenue NE with shell casings.  ShotSpotter detected 8 rounds at # 2 Massachusetts Ave.  So we had lookout broadcasted for a Hit & Run vehicle speeding away from Union Station around the same time as when Shotspotter alert come out. “Dear PoPville,

For the second time in a week we have widespread power outage issues in the triangle east of 2nd St NE, South of Florida Ave and north of the H Street. On the Pepco outage map it looks like approximately 1,300 customers are without power. Last week’s outage(s) map looked like a “Whac-A-Mole” game, one outage would get fixed and multiple smaller ones would pop up. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I work near Union Station and use to live around the area two years ago, and have noticed the amount of homeless people and drug users around Union Station appears to have dramatically increased. Whenever I walk over to the station, there are groups of people completely passed out or tweaking from drugs. Recently, one person, who was clearly high, was just wandering around in the middle of the street with his eyes closed. Later I saw, the police had to intervene.

Anyway, it makes me feel very unsafe and uneasy about walking over to Union Station. Does anyone know why there has been—what appears to be–an increase in homeless people in the area?”

Ed. Note: In May of 2016 we spoke about “Harassment Outside Union Station” and later that month Korrin L. Bishop, on behalf of Capitol Hill Group Ministry wrote a thoughtful response.

Back in January we first broke the news that a Magnolia Bakery (and many others) was coming to Union Station. We just got word that they’ll be opening in September! Here’s the full press release:

“Magnolia Bakery, the cult New York City bakery, cherished for its freshly baked, classic American desserts, is thrilled to announce that it will soon open inside Washington, D.C.’s historic Union Station. Upon debuting, the brand will introduce its signature cupcakes, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, icebox desserts and more to the Nation’s Capital. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I write to you to highlight what appears to be a systemic problem and/or waste of resources by the D.C. Housing Authority and its employees at their headquarters, located at 1133 North Capitol St. NE in NoMa.

Although the Housing Authority has two parking lots (an open lot in the front of their building and a gated lot behind as noted in some of the pictures, in addition to paid parking in lots at 44-88 M St NE), the Housing Authority routinely and consistently parks their DC government vehicles in metered spots on both M St NE and Pierce St NE.
