“Dear PoPville,

Walking home yesterday, I noticed that a fence had been installed around these two buildings next door to Yale Lofts on New York Avenue, NW.

Any news on what the definitive plans are for these to buildings or this lot? One is a gorgeous victorian home, and I would hope that at least the facade is preserved.

Does anyone know if these are going to be part of the Yale complex or is this lot going to be something entirely on its own?

Anyone know for sure?”

I’m really hoping these get restored. I’m eager to see what they end up looking like on the inside. Anyone know who the developer is?

Great news to end the week. The long anticipated gourmet sandwich shop from some of the folks behind Seasonal Pantry is opening at noon today. It is located around the corner from Seasonal Pantry in the alley off 9th Street behind 1314 9th St, NW.

Their Web site says:

A non-traditional space lends itself to a non-traditional sandwich shop. Most sandwich shops in the city have a flavor profile that carries through their entire product line. Whether it be Italian, Jewish, or Middle Eastern influenced, many menu items taste similar to one another which can get a little boring. At SUNdeVICH we wanted to address this fact by using the world as our flavor guide and our immediate backyard for our ingredients. SUNdeVICH offers a wide range of flavors, textures and combinations that may seem familiar but have a distinct twist.

The objective is to provide a wide range of bold flavors by using fresh and local ingredients. Ideally people can eat at SUNdeVICH multiple times a week; and have a completely different dining experience each time.

You can see their menu here and in PDF below:

“Dear PoP,

All of the 400 block of Massachusetts Ave NW was shut down until a few minutes ago. There are a dozen cop cars and police tape keeping bystanders back. Any idea what’s going on? Oh, and one of the very few times I’ve seen an MPD officer w/ an MP5 machine gun.”

UPSStore6047 tweets:

“Armed person arrested and taken into custody on the corner of 5th & Mass Ave NW”

DDOTDC tweets:

“Update: the 400 and 500 blocks of Massachusetts Ave., NW are now back open to traffic.”

Despite being a large attractive end unit Victorian with a sexy round turret, 500 M St NW languished on the market for over 200 days with no takers. Oh yah…it was 1998. In 1998, the entire building was being offered for $219,900. Eventually, it sold in 1999 for $200,000.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

This adorable sign went up this week on 9th Street NW between L and M (it’s right next door to Corduroy). Can you find out the scoop for us? This block is full of boarded up buidlings, so whatever goes in here will be welcome!”

You’re gonna be very happy! The building was bought by the owner of Corduroy and he will be opening a more casual restaurant. It’s going to be called Velour and should be open in about a year. Washingtonian reported:

He [Corduroy owner Chef Tom Power] says he wants to keep the prices low—”nothing over $18 or $20″—on the menu, which will include soups, salads, maybe grilled cheese, pizza, and a lobster roll. The press release quotes Power as saying he’ll possibly serve “things like hot dogs from the New Jersey shore, pupusas, a steak, crispy salmon with refried black beans.”

We re-judged Corduroy located at 1122 9th St, NW back in Dec. ’10.

Looks like some good news for Mt. Vernon Square. The retail space on the corner of the 401 Massachusetts Ave NW (4th and Mass.) will be the home to a new “European Café with wine bar” to be called TEL’VEH. A recent liquor license application says:

New Tavern. European Café with wine bar. Breakfast and lunch with bakery. Small plates during dinner and wine bar, no dancing. Seating capacity is 75. Summer Garden capacity is 40. Total Occupancy Load is 115.
