New “European Café with wine bar” Coming to Mt. Vernon Square

Looks like some good news for Mt. Vernon Square. The retail space on the corner of the 401 Massachusetts Ave NW (4th and Mass.) will be the home to a new “European Café with wine bar” to be called TEL’VEH. A recent liquor license application says:

New Tavern. European Café with wine bar. Breakfast and lunch with bakery. Small plates during dinner and wine bar, no dancing. Seating capacity is 75. Summer Garden capacity is 40. Total Occupancy Load is 115.

This whole stretch of Mass Ave seems so desolate. Is it just me? You would think it would be more developed with retail/restaurants. Are there still a lot of vacancies in the condo/apartment buildings that line this stretch?

Took forever to complete that building because the developer went bust

There are three retail establishments coming in- Sixth Engine bar & restaurant (in the old firehouse). Rumored brasserie from the owners of Brasserie Beck to the nearly falling down tiny holdout rowhouse. And then this cafe. It will never be a “happening strip” due to the lack or retail space, but it’s not exactly desolate. That said, the reason I hate most American cities is the canyon effect of tall bland buildings, and this area of DC is one of the few that has that effect on me.

PS What ever happened to the multi-concept hookah lounge that was supposed to come into the large 4 story building at 3rd and Mass? The owner ran out of money?

  • Sounds like the cafe from Footloose…

I just moved from that building and now they decide to put in a wine bar? Not fair! Ha. It’s actually not desolate over there, and I think it will become something of a “happening strip” eventually… there’s a lot of retail space (behind 401 & 425 on I Street, all along 5th street between I & K) that is starting to fill up. Plus it’s only two blocks or so to Chinatown. I loved living there.

Very exciting!! Was hoping for some kind of restaurant there since Buddha bar is really the only thing right downstairs. Also, anyone know whats happening around the corner at 425 eye? Got excited when I saw tables and chairs in there but now I think it might have just been storage for VA…
