“Dear PoPville,
We live in Chinatown near 4th and Mass and recently received notice from the 3rd Street Tunnel Project that night work would begin occasionally starting May 27th and through the end of the 14 month project.
Last night we were woken up by jack hammering at the corner of 4th and Mass in a heavily residential corner at 12:45 AM and were awake through at least 3 AM with amazingly loud noise. We were told by the police and the construction crew, that as long as they have a permit that there is nothing we can do. Is that true? Please help, I can’t spend 14 months not sleeping!!!”

@WeinDC tweets us these photos from 7th and New York Ave, NW by the convention center. Looks like the Living Social building?

From the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington:
“You may have heard about the synagogue mural recently rediscovered behind an apartment wall in Vermont, but you may not know that hidden on the second floor of 415 M Street, NW, right here in Washington, is a fragment of the only known synagogue mural in the area. It was painted almost 90 years ago, and, until the 1990s, preserved under layers of paint and wallpaper. The building is going to be converted to condos this summer, and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington has started a campaign to cultivate awareness about the mural, and raise funds to rescue the original elements of it.
The mural is the remaining portion of a larger piece that once surrounded the synagogue’s ark. In 1993, as if peeling back layers of time, the then-owner rediscovered the mural hidden beneath layers of old paint and wallpaper. With help from an artist and guidance from the Jewish Historical Society, she worked to restore the celestial scene, Jewish star, and a portion of the biblical quote that encircled the ark – and added a winged lion. In 2013, BlackRock Holdings, a custom-home building company based in McLean, VA, purchased the building and will convert the property into a multi-family condominium later this summer.
JHSGW and BlackRock Holdings hope to save this unique piece of Washington, DC Jewish history before construction starts in July. We have a proposal in hand from a conservation firm to remove and conserve the mural. But we need to act quickly to raise at least $20,000 to remove and preserve the mural. Your donation will make it possible for the Jewish Society of Greater Washington to preserve this remnant of our past for generations to come.”

The Washington Business Journal reported the lease signing and says:
“The Brazilian-style steakhouse, which features all-you-can-eat meats served in the churrascaria style as well as a large seasonal salad bar, has a location in Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, and another in Richmond.”
Anyone happen to have tried one of those locations?

“Dear PoPville,
Q West 2, located next to the buildings that collapsed a couple of weeks ago in Mt. Vernon, has re-opened for business. They had just opened the new location a few weeks before the accident and were starting to build the client base there. Obviously, the accident has set them back a bit. I’m sure they’d appreciate if you could help spread the word.”
I felt so bad for them when I first saw the photos – def. show them some love if you live or work nearby.

440 K Street, NW
A liquor license placard has been posted for a new liquor store, Grand Cata, in the Lyric building at 440 K St, NW. And in other retail news for the Lyric – District Source reports:
“The owners of Baked & Wired, a popular Georgetown cafe, are negotiating a lease at Mt. Vernon Triangle’s The Lyric, 440 K St. NW, to open a new bread shop and cafe. They are hoping to lease 4,000 square feet to house a bread bakery, retail space and cafe seating.”
That would be a big score for Mt. Vernon Square.

Baby Wale opened up by the Convention Center back in August of last year. I’ve been meaning to ask about them for while now. You can see their sample menu here. Any fans?
From MPD:
“At approximately 1:50 a.m., units from the Third District received multiple calls for the sounds of gunshots in the 1200 block of 7th Street, NW. Units immediately responded to the location and observed one male fleeing the location on foot. After a brief foot pursuit the units were able to make an apprehension. The units were also able to recover two handguns. Shortly after the subject was stopped, members of the Third District received a call from Metro Transit Police in reference to a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department on (202) 727-9099.”
Ed. Note: @DCPoliceDept also tweeted “3D Shooting-0213 Hrs-7th & R Street NW” not clear if these incidents are related.
