Yesterday @prestonrhea sent word via twitter:

“Today’s Mount Pleasant listserv: a potentially rabid fox seems to have wandered around NW MtP and bit a woman in the ankle.”

And this morning I received the following email:

Dear PoPville,

Just a word of caution to PoPville- watch out for foxes near rock creek park. My friend was walking with her baby yesterday on Tilden Rd in Mount Pleasant on her way towards Rock Creek and a fox attacked her. She said the lone fox came out of nowhere and went straight for her ankle. Her husband was with her and was able to beat it off and animal control eventually caught it in someone’s front yard. She ended up in urgent care receiving at least 20 injections, one for each bite wound and she’ll need to go back for at least 5 more follow up injections. Her leg is pretty messed up. Thankfully, the baby is fine.

From MPD:

Robert Jeter, 19, and Davon Watkins, 18, both from Washington, D.C., were each sentenced today to 12 years in prison for carjacking one victim and committing an armed robbery against another victim within a matter of hours, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

Jeter and Watkins pled guilty in October 2012 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable Gerald I. Fisher sentenced them to seven years in prison on the carjacking charge and an additional five years for the armed robbery.

According to the government’s evidence, the defendants approached the carjacking victim at about 10:30 p.m. on June 21, 2012 as he was walking from his car in a parking lot behind 1400 block of Irving Street NW. Watkins put a gun to the victim’s head while Jeter took the victim’s wallet and cell phone. Watkins then demanded the victim’s car keys. Watkins and Jeter then got into the victim’s car and fled the scene.

About six hours later, at about 4:15 a.m. on June 22, 2012, Jeter and Watkins approached the armed robbery victim as he was walking on Mount Pleasant Street NW. They knocked the victim to the ground, put guns to his head, and took his wallet and cell phone.

About 15 minutes after the armed robbery, police spotted the car taken in the earlier carjacking. The defendants ultimately abandoned the car and fled on foot. They were apprehended in the 1100 block of Clifton Street NW. The armed robbery victim’s cell phone was found in the center console of the stolen car. Fingerprint and DNA evidence analyzed by the D.C. Forensics Laboratory tied Jeter and Watkins to the stolen car.

In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Machen commended the efforts of the detectives, officers, crime scene technicians, and forensic analysts who investigated the case for the Metropolitan Police Department. He also acknowledged those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Victim Witness Advocate Jennifer Clark, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Allison Barlotta, Vivien Cockburn, Bridget Fitzpatrick, and Jonathan Kravis, who investigated and obtained the indictment in the case.

We first heard Beau Thai would be opening a second location in Mt. Pleasant back in July 2012. More recently in Sept. 2012 we saw they applied for a liquor license and sidewalk cafe. I was happy to see an update on their Facebook page:

Opening in the heart of the vibrant Mount Pleasant neighborhood in mid-February 2013!!

We’re making the final edits to our new Mt. Pleasant menu. With our expansive new kitchen, we’re excited to be able to serve a whole new category of offerings: Thai Noodle Bowls. Known as a quick, on-the-go meal in Thailand, Thai noodle bowls pack a lot of flavor and are great for a quick bite (or to relish alongside your friends in our beautiful new restaurant!).

Thanks to Jack for sending this great shot of another hawk sighting:

“Funny, when this fellow showed up on my back deck in Mount Pleasant, the finches patronizing my bird feeder nearby abruptly disappeared.”

In 2011 Nana moved from U Street to Mt. Pleasant. Nana’s owner Jackie Flanagan shares some bittersweet news:

After 10 years as a brick and mortar clothing store in D.C., Jackie Flanagan is making changes to her business model for 2013. Flanagan will continue to design the Nana Clothing line produced here in D.C. and host numerous sales events but will close the brick and mortar store in Mount Pleasant.

“This is an extremely personal decision for me — one based on my desire to spend more time on my favorite aspects of the Nana business: designing the Nana line and planning fabulous shopping events! It is bittersweet to leave the brick & mortar environment after a decade, but I am excited to focus on the design and styling side of Nana and to stay connected to our wonderful community of customers through our events in 2013,” says Flanagan. She adds, “I love Mount Pleasant, and the Nana spot is a great one. I am excited to see what entrepreneur scoops it up and brings a new idea to the neighborhood.”

Flanagan adds:

“There is no firm closing date yet, but it will be between January 21st and 24th. Our Winter Clearance Sale is in full-effect. Stop by before your favorite styles (all on sale) are scooped up! Then the store will be all ready for our clothing swap on January 26th.”

Keep up to date with Nana here.
