“Dear PoP,

I live in Shaw and saw that the bodega on 11th and O was shuttered with its outdoor signs taken down. I met the owner who said he’s going to be renovating the building and is looking for some commercial tenants. I guess he had preliminarily spoken with the Saint Ex / Bar Pillar folks, but he’s apparently open to suggestions.”

I feel like this building has been boarded up for ages. So glad to hear it’ll be getting some love soon. What do you guys think would work here – a nicer bodega/corner store or do you think the retail is big enough for a restaurant/bar like the nearby Veranda at 11th and P St, NW?

Who do you think would be the ideal commercial tenant here?

UPDATE: St. Ex has informed me that they have zero interest in this property. Looking forward to seeing who ends up there.

$1400 sound right for this studio?

Back in September we learned that Tsunami Lounge would be opening above Thai Tanic at 1326 14th St, NW. I feel stopped in to take some photos and the place turned out quite nice. Anyone sample the sushi yet?

Do I need glasses or are those photos a bit blurry? Very strange. From what you can see – do you like the layout? This 2 bed/1.5 bath is going for $524,900 with a $451.25 homeowners fee. Sound realistic? If not what do you think it’ll go for?

Does $1400 sound right for this basement apartment right off Logan Circle?

This is from the 1300 block of 14th St, NW. The space that used to house Rollin Cycles and will become more apartments and retail on the ground floor. It is my dream that one day a bright-eyed blogger (or ‘journo-blogger’ as they’ll then be called) will discover this photo in 2049 and say, “holy shit”.

In the meantime – soak up the ‘before’…

And let’s hope they keep this classic transom:

HR 57 is located at 1610 14th Street, NW. We last spoke about them back in Jan. ’10. And we’ve said that they are one of the best spots to hear live jazz/blues and we’ve also listed them as one of the best date spots in the city.

That is why I think the news is so devastating for the Logan Circle neighborhood of 14th St, NW. It is such a unique space that can not easily be replaced. Logan Circle will obviously still thrive but removing this neighborhood gem is a punch to the gut even if it is replaced by a really good restaurant. I had heard about the possibility of a closure for a while but I sorta pushed it to the back of my head hoping it couldn’t possibly be true. I’ll be honest – I’m destroyed by this news.

The huge news was broken by City Paper Sunday afternoon:

“Tonight, however, staffers — including owner/director Tony Puesan — confirmed that the first week of January will find HR-57 relocating to a property at H and 9th Streets NE. “It’s a very nice place,” says Puesan. “It’s just in a little bit cheaper building.” The current building, which Puesan owns, is being sold.”

The author Michael J. West speculates:

“it’s a risky venture trading a Metro-accessible location in the U Street corridor’s established jazz district for a still up-and-coming neighborhood whose transit options consist of a shuttlebus and still-unfinished streetcar system.”

I think this is a huge score for the H St, NE area. Despite the concerns mentioned above, I think they will be hugely successful. Of course I haven’t seen the new space at 9th and H St, but I’m certainly looking forward to checking them out.

What do you guys think – will HR 57 thrive on H St, NE?

You can find more info here and photos here.

This is certainly an interesting set up. You think it would be ridiculously expensive to combine the units into one home? I’m def. digging the garden. Does $889,000 sound reasonable or is it gonna need another price drop?

“Dear PoP,

There was a homicide in the alley between 11&12th st. and M&N streets NW today. Seems like there isn’t a lot of information as of now. My girlfriends building backs up to this alley and there was a note on the building advising residents not to use the back door. This brief article was posted on the Washington Post website.”

An MPD press release went out yesterday:

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating the fatal stabbing which occurred in the 1200 block of 11th Street, NW.

On Monday, November 8, 2010, at approximately 4:00 pm, Units from the Third District responded to the 1200 block of 11th Street, NW for the report of an unconscious person. Upon arriving, they discovered an unresponsive victim suffering from stab wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and did not find any signs consistent with life.

The decedent is identified as 54 year-old Miguel Ventura of Lanham, Maryland.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).

Ed. Note: The Post this morning also has the tragic story of the teen killed in Trinidad Monday referenced in the newsbrief above.

Back in Feb. ’10 we learned that the old Garden District space at the corner of 14th and S St, NW would become a burger joint. A reader sends the heads up:

“I spoke to the guy and the girl out front and they told me that it’s going to be a burger/bbq/local stuff restaurant ”

So, I also headed over to the space and talked to some folks. And they also told me that the menu would be expanded from focusing solely on burgers to including a serious bbq component. Sweet! As you walk by you can now notice that some picnic tables are starting to be assembled. (In July we noted there would be a sidewalk cafe.) They hope to open this winter in what will be a soft opening since the majority of the space is outdoors. They can fit around 15 inside and around 99 outside. So in the spring time they will have a proper grand opening. I’ll be sure to update when opening dates are firmed up.

Do you like the addition of bbq options?
