Wed. morning there was a ceremony announcing the launch of this new project. Was it worth getting completely soaked? No, but I am excited about the project. I think it’s going to inject a lot of life into this section of 14th St.

So, what do you think of the rendering? Think it’s a good fit for the 14th Street corridor?

Details from a press release:

The JBG Companies and Grosvenor announce plans for a premier mixed-use residential and retail development.

Located in the heart of Logan Circle, the new glass, metal and terracotta structure will incorporate the historic building that once housed the Whitman-Walker Clinic. It will span the entire block of 14th Street NW between S and Swann streets NW. Construction on the project is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2012.

The development was designed by Shalom Baranes Architects, one of the area’s most prolific designers, known for its innovative style and extensive historic preservation experience. When completed, the building will be seven stories and will offer 125 sleek condominium residences. The renowned Toronto-based interior design firm, Cecconi Simone Inc., selected all of the building’s interior finishes and designed the unit layouts and all common area spaces, including a lobby lounge, fitness center and extensive rooftop terrace. Building features include a glass and terracotta façade with balconies and private unit terraces. An elaborate rooftop terrace amenity area will feature outdoor living rooms, an outdoor kitchen and bar, a fire pit, water feature and a sundeck. The first floor will have 18,000 square feet of retail space.

A new building is going up on what was a vacant lot at 1503 11th St, NW. Looks pretty promising. Probably too early for a proper judging but I’ll be sure to repost when it’s all finished. At the moment it looks like it’ll fit in nicely.

Opening up a Thai restaurant right across the street from an established Thai restaurant (Thai Tanic, 1326 14th St, NW) can be a bold move. I’ve heard very mixed reviews about Teak Wood located at 1323 14th Street, NW. But I gotta be honest, when I went I had a delicious meal. Of course I can’t remember what dish I ordered (but it was something with shrimp). And I do remember enjoying my spring roll as well.

So for those who’ve been – what’s the verdict? Any must order dishes? Is it better than Thai Tanic?

Ed. Note: Don’t forget, as previously noted, Thai Tanic is fighting back by opening soon a sushi lounge upstairs called Tsunami:

The listing says:

“Additional information: Cable – Laundry Room in bldg. – Tenant may install window A/C unit.
Utilities Included in rent: Heat, Hot Water, Tenant pays Electric & Cooking Gas

The reader says:

“I’m looking to live alone and this seems to be one of the few places I can afford without giving up my social life. Just wondering if this is a good deal or not worth it!”

It appears to be a 504 square foot efficiency going for $840 a month. I’d say for this location that seems right on target but I don’t know much about the particular building and it is hard to judge without photos of the inside. So a few questions – anyone familiar with this building? Are postings like this useful or should I only post ones that have photos of the inside as well? And based on the information we have does $840 seem like a reasonable deal here?

We judged Estadio’s dinner menu in late August. Estadio is located at 1520 14th Street NW in Logan Circle. This sounds like very good news. From a press release:

“On Sunday, October 24th, Estadio will debut its brunch menu, tempting weekend warriors with a taste of Spain from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The restaurant will accept reservations for all party sizes before noon, and will begin offering Saturday brunch on November 13th.

Executive Chef Haidar Karoum will offer a varied selection of dishes, including some traditional brunch items with Spanish accents, such as Warm Spanish torrijas (French Toast) with walnut butter and Vermont maple syrup, Fried hen eggs with chorizo and morcilla hash and a Cheeseburger topped with Manchego and spicy aioli on a brioche sesame bun. The menu will also feature seasonal specialties, such as Pumpkin croquetas with quince dipping sauce and Roasted butternut squash salad and pear salad with spinach, cherries and hazelnuts.

The Craigslist ad says:

Does $1475/month all utilities included sound reasonable for this junior 1 bedroom?

There was a lot of excitement about the potential of this property. So I was pretty excited when I saw some permits up on the window. Back in June we learned from the Washington Post that the space would become the ‘Italian Shirt Laundry’ a “a combination pizzeria and bakery”. Curiously the permit in the window says the proposed future use is still a dry cleaners. It’ll be interesting to see if that deal fell through or if the permit was simply mislabeled. Stay tuned for more info as the renovations progresses. In the meantime an asbestos removal project is underway.

For those stuck at work on Columbus Day, I thought you’d like a fun one. It’s yours for $1,175,000.

Exciting news about the restaurant coming to 1612 14th St, NW. We’ve been monitoring this property very closely. But now there are lots more details to share. Firstly the bar upstairs will be called Black Jack and the restaurant downstairs will be called Pearl Dive:

Secondly, as I was waking by the store I also noticed, in addition the poster above, a rendering of what the outside will look like:

Thirdly, Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post shares some great details:

“Logan Circle is netting another restaurant, this time from chef Jeff Black, who announced today that he’s buying the building at 1612 14th St. NW on October 20 and calling it The Pearl Dive Oyster Palace. The two-story venue, which he hopes to open in time for Valentine’s Day, will feature an oyster bar and 75-seat dining room on the street level and an upstairs bar — with a bocce ball court — called BlackJack.”

This sounds amazing, can’t wait for Valentine’s Day!

And finally, I’m not sure if it is big enough but after the jump you can see the architectural designs including what both floors will look like. (more…)
