The strange saga of Logan Circle’s Bar di Bari continues. In October we learned the space abruptly closed with no notice only to later learn they were considering closing on Mondays or limiting hours during the winter. Now CityPaper reports that the space will become a new concept called Red Light. No details nor timing were given but Bar di Bari was still open as of yesterday. Their Facebook page also remains live though it hasn’t been updated since Dec. 13th. More info when it becomes available.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m with the Frontiers Condominia Association, a cooperative non profit group whose members are owners of Frontiers- you know, the 54 units at 14th between S and Riggs, as well as similar properties around 11th and N/M streets. At one time we were public housing, however in the late 1990’s the city sold units to resident owners.

As you know in the last few years we’ve had some developers offer to buy out Frontiers, however that has not come to pass. That said, at least two of the developers have been buying up some Frontiers units, though we are still by a large margin still owner occupied- a mix of long term residents as well as some newcomers (like myself).

In any event, the association collectively own one unit, 1342 S Street. We decided a couple of years ago that instead of using it as a place for the association to meet and store records that we’d renovate it and rent it out. We finished doing a modest but nice re-renovation in late fall and it is ready to rent.

Some think it ought to rent out for about $3000, yet we’ve seen other modestly renovated units in our association rent for $6000. We on the board feel that this is a good deal- four bedrooms, full basement, back and front yard, parking space in one of the hottest parts of town.

Is $5000 / 4br – Newly Renovated 4BR, 2BA Townhouse! (1342 S Street, NW) a good deal or not?“

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I just witnessed a ridiculous hit-and-run accident in Logan Circle. We were walking our dog in the circle around 1:15am when we noticed a Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding and screeching around the circle. After exiting the circle onto 13th St. southbound, the Jeep slammed into the sedan stopped at a red light at O St. When my husband and I came to help/get the license plate info, the driver tried backing up over the median to flee the scene, but was unable to get away. My husband then grabbed the keys from the driver. The driver jumped out of the car, screaming belligerently, and ran off down 13th St., leaving her incomprehensibly drunk husband in the passenger’s seat…a literal hit-and-run! We called the cops and they arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. Not sure what will happen with this couple–probably just a hefty fine–but I’m glad they didn’t hurt anyone. Good reminder to NEVER drive drunk, kiddos!

Thanks to all who sent word. Back in October we learned that most DC Caribou Coffee locations would reopen as Peet’s Coffee & Tea. Looks like this is the first one. I spoke with an employee inside this location who said he thought this location would become a training spot for all the Peet’s DC employees. He believes after training and renovations the new Peet’s should open here in about three months. I’ll be sure to update when renovations are complete and an exact date is known.

“Dear PoPville,

Many owners at The Iowa Condominium are not happy about Holladay Corporation’s plans for new condos on the 13th Street lots currently occupied by Mr. Wash and Jerry Chan’s Carry Out (see Dupont Current 11/13/13 article – p. 12). Holladay’s plans will negatively impact the quality of life for Iowa residents as they include constructing a 60-foot high wall that’s 23 feet away from the back of Iowa Condo townhouses. This 60-foot high wall will block direct sunlight from the units on the south side of the Iowa as well as a large portion of the unique Iowa Condo courtyard / fountain area. When an Iowa condo owner spoke with a representative at Holladay about the wall height/closeness, loss of sunlight and privacy concerns, the response included “that’s part of living in the city”. Finally, the proposed 67 condo units will bring more cars and fewer parking options to a neighborhood where parking is already at a premium.

Many Iowa Condo owners would like a lower building height with more of a Blagden Alley/Naylor Court feel to better fit in with this uniquely configured block. There is also strong interest in replacing the existing alley between the Iowa and proposed new condos with a “green alley” (with no vehicle traffic) per the following link: http://greengaragedetroit.com/index.php?title=Green_alley.

It appears that Holladay is not interested in Logan Circle community feedback based on their lack of contact with the LCCA, the ANC and Jack Evans’ office to date. We hope by getting info about Holladay’s current condo plans out to community, we might be able to incent them to work with residents to create a neighborhood asset.”
