Napa 1015, located at 1015 H St, NE, had very mixed reviews when we judged them in Sept. ’09 and subsequently closed. I’m hearing some very exciting scuttlebutt. And at least part of it is true because Frozen Tropics along with @HStreetDC have referenced a new restaurant, Atlas Room, will opening up in this spot. So what can I add? I’m hearing that a former chef from Citronelle will be working at the new place. Very cool if true.

And with less confidence I share a bit of scuttlebutt about the uber popular Sticky Rice located at 1224 H St, NE, I’m hearing that they’ll be expanding. Again I haven’t confirmed this but heard from a pretty reliable source. I’m hearing that they’ve acquired a neighboring property, perhaps the red brick townhouse to the left? I’ll be sure to update if either of these rumors turn out to be true.

In real life, hipchickindc is actually the not-so-hip Suzanne Des Marais, an associate broker with Urban Pace. Voted one of the best real estate agents in DC by the Washington City Paper Readers’ Choice Poll in 2009, Suzanne is currently Chair of the DC Public Policy Committee for the Greater Capital Area Association of REALTORS® and is President Elect of the Washington, DC Association of REALTORS®. She lives (and sells a lot of houses) in Bloomingdale, but works all over DC, with everyone from first time buyers to highly regarded developers.

Not surprisingly, the original Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post regarding this property brought on a debate over whether this location is in fact Capitol Hill or Not Capitol Hill or Old City or H Street. Doing some poking around online, I found that the Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance Blog has claimed the property as being on the edge of Rosedale boundaries, so I’ll go with that. Given its proximity to the burgeoning H Street corridor, Rosedale has seen a bit of a revival lately. The neighborhood was enthusiastically portrayed in April as part of The Washington Post’s Where We Live series.

The momentum created by the Federal Housing Tax Credit (for which the contract deadline was the 30th of April) was very good to Rosedale, with 36 settled sales since the beginning of 2010, several of which escalated above list price. The lowest sale for a house (not condo) was $68,500., while a property on Tennessee Avenue sold for $533,000. (The Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance Blog lists 15th Street as the far west boundary, so Tennessee Ave may technically be a few feet outside the invisible lines). Current active listings for houses range from $149,000 to $339,900.

I’m able to give away 2 pairs of tickets, I’ll select two winners from the comments. Share your favorite Bruce song and/or concert and I’ll announce the winners Friday.

From the organizers:

DC’S ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 1333 H ST. NE, HOSTS TWO SCREENINGS OF THE BOSS’S FIRST OUTRDOOR CONCERT FILM EVER!

Captured in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in June, 2009 in HD, this concert film captures Bruce Springsteen, the best live rock and roll performer of his generation (and a couple of other generations as well!).

“London Calling: Live In Hyde Park” conveys both the experience of being on-stage with Bruce Springsteen and the vast crowd experience of the festival environment. Viewers are able to see Springsteen spontaneously directing the E Street Band and shaping the show as it evolves.

The set list spans from “Born To Run” era to “Working On a Dream” and includes rare covers such as The Clash’s “London Calling,” which opened the show and wowed the crowd!

“The concert earned rave reviews. The London Times called it “epic” and “a revved-up… power drive through Springsteen’s America.” Concurs The Independent, “He awed the 50,000-strong crowd… Drenched in sweat by the second number, tossing his guitars to the roadies with the vigour of a frontman a third of his age and jogging down a walkway to meet his fans and take their requests, Springsteen’s intensity was staggering from first powerful vocal to final thrashed-out chord.”

Don’t miss these two chances to rock out with the Boss! Tickets are $15 and are available at www.atlasarts.org starting May 25!”

Thanks to a reader for sending the word. The new place will be located at 1112 1110 H Street, NE. We talked about Jin, located at 2017 14th St, NW near Busboys & Poets, here. Not sure when the H St location will open but the reader sent in an old liquor application license which was posted in Nov. ’09:

It said:

“New restaurant featuring Asian cuisine and a summer garden with 25 seats. Request an entertainment endorsement to feature live bands, DJ, and Karaoke with no designated dance floor. Occupancy load of 99.”

“Dear PoP,

Taylor Gourmet’s H Street location (1116 H St. NE) will be extending their late night hours starting today through fall. This store will now be serving their sandwiches until 230 am every Thursday in addition to the normal late night hours Friday and Saturday until 330 am.”

What are some other good late night dining options around town besides pizza?

Last week it looked like Biergarten haus, located at 1355 H Street, NE was going to open up at the end of this week. While they are now shooting for May 14th for an official opening date, they are still awaiting some final permits before officially announcing an opening date. I was, however, able to take a sneak peek on Tuesday and all I can say is that the hype we’ve been hearing is warranted. The inside feels like a ski lodge with tons of wood and a warm feeling despite some finishing touches still ongoing. The inside actually takes up two floors with a nice bar on the first floor and 5 big flat screen tvs upstairs that will show European soccer matches.

But no matter how good the inside looks the real gem of this place is the outdoor beer garden. It is far larger than I originally anticipated and I’m gonna be bold for a second because I love Wonderland’s patio and I’m even quite fond of Red Rock’s patio but this beer garden (even in its slightly unfinished state) is by far the coolest outdoor restaurant/bar space in the city. It even has an outside bar. The section closer to the building will be mostly standing room/first come first served and the tables in the back will seat 4 tops and larger parties. As I’ve heard a few people say, the only fear is that this place is going to be insanely crowded when they open. Stay tuned for when a final opening date is selected.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

I’m gonna oversimplify this but in my mind U Street/14th Street, NW, Georgia Ave, NW and H St, NE were commercially decimated by the 1968 riots. U Street/14th Street, NW has had an amazing renaissance. H St, NE is slowly on it’s way to an amazing renaissance. Georgia Ave, especially lower Georgia Ave is lagging very far behind. [ DC Mud recently highlighted some of the avenue’s woes.] So I have a couple of questions – is it gonna take the installation of street cars for lower Georgia Ave to become an attractive investment? Is lower Georgia Ave not gonna be touched by investors until H St, NE gets saturated and/or becomes too expensive?

My mind is rambling so bear with me. I walked around H St, NE over the weekend and during the day, to me, it felt absolutely deserted (H St itself not the surrounding neighborhoods). I suspect that feeling/reality may change when some of the street rail construction is cleaned up. So an unrelated question is – do you think H St, NE will ever have some daytime attractions or do you think it will remain a nighttime only destination?

Ed. Note: I think the new H St, NE signs in the photo above look fantastic.

In a city that seems to have an endless supply of new restaurant/bar openings, this one is definitely the most eagerly anticipated in my circles. Biergarten haus is located at 1355 H Street NE.

In the meantime don’t forget about Old Europe at 2434 Wisconsin Ave, NW in Glover Park which has been serving the city schnitzel since 1948…
