“Dear PoP,

This is Alberto Sissi, I am opening a lebanese shawarma and falafel quick served restaurant, the name comes from the two words combined “Shawafel” we will be serving chicken, lamb and beef mixed shawarma the traditional way which is made from scratch. we will be buying all our meet from local farmers cutting it,marinating it, and then skwered on the vertical spit same goes for the chicken shawarma. we will be serving spreds such as hummus and baba ghanoug. salads tabouleh and fattouch, for vegeterian option we will be serving a coliflower sandwich that is topped with lettuce, tahini sauce, pickels and fries inside the sandwich. for the night goers the french fries sandwich should be satisfying it is a signature sandwich that we will be offering, topping remain a secret. Our hours of operation will be opening every day at 11:00am and closing sun, mon, tue at 9:00pm and weekend open till 3:00am.

My expertise in the restaurant business comes from a long journey with Jose Andres and Think Food Group their excellent customer service and attention to details taught me how to treat a guest and make them come back, also on the cooking side i was given intense training in the shawarma making at Rimal restaurant in Paris (rimal.fr) which is owned by the Khoury brothers, Growing up in Lebanon and moving to Washington I come to realize that not one place offers the real shawarma that’s what made me decide to be a pioneer in making people relate to the countries they lived in or visited through the experience they will get at Shawafel.”

Sounds awesome! Looking forward to hearing what folks think in a few weeks. Shawafel will be located at 1322 H st NE.

I actually wanted to post this as a GDoN but I couldn’t find the listing. So free PoP t-shirt to the first person who can find the listing. It’s located behind H St, NE in what I thought was Linden Ct. I’m dying to see the inside!

What do you think of it from the outside?

This rental is located at 317 10th St, NE:

Khan’s Bar and Grill is located at 1125 H St, NE. Ever since I posted a Food Friday (2nd pic) I’ve been curious what folks think. While they’ve only been open a short time – I’m super curious about this “Mongolian Asian Fusion”. Their Facebook page says:

“Interactive Mongolian grill experience. Great lunchtime destination and meeting place, with a very wide variety of Asian delights. In addition a great place to watch almost any game on one of our 10 L.E.D. 1080P HDTV’s, or our super huge 110″ HD Projector and amazing sound!”

Anyone check them out yet? What was the interactive Mongolian grill experience like?

Sounds like this could also be a good place to watch the NFL draft tonight.

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any idea what was going on in the 1200 Block of H. St. NE on Saturday around 5pm? Around 4:00 or so there were 2 squad cars, 1 wagon and 10-12 motorcycle cops heading East on H. st with lights and sirens on. About an hour later 6-8 MPD Bicycle cops were stopping cars in the middle of H. St in front of the Autozone parking lot and were stopping cars somewhat randomly for about an hour-hour and a half. They appeared to be handing out citations to some of the drivers. They were standing on the double yellow line with about 3-4 MPD officers checking cars, waving cars on and directing traffic somewhat as well as stopping some cars here and there. They were all out of there by 7:00 or there about.

I have noticed an increased presence by MPD since a few weeks ago when there were a couple of muggings and a stabbing in the area of 13th and H. st. But I haven’t seen anything like this where it appears they were running some kind of check point. Anyhow, if you’ve heard anything about this I would be interested to know what was going on. It’s a first on H. St. as far as I know.”

Anyone else see this show of force? I know MPD uses this tactic from time around town. Have you ever seen a similar show of force in your neighborhood? I remember seeing a similar show of force last year on 11th St, NW in Columbia Heights and on New Hampshire Ave, NW in Petworth. It is also a common sight when Chief Lanier calls for an “all hands on deck” which has been a semi regular occurrence during her tenure.

Unfortunately DC Alerts reported a robbery on that very block Sun. night:

“Robbery Snatch @ 2109 hrs 1200 H St NE LOF B/M, 5’10, thin build, wearing a black baseball cap and L/S running in the 800 block of 12th St NE”

On my walkabout last weekend I heard some very interesting scuttlebutt about the property currently covered by netting above that will sit next to the future Evolve headquarters. I heard that the property was bought/leased by the owners of Fly Lounge. Fly Lounge is the Dupont club located at 1802 Jefferson Place NW just off Connecticut Ave, NW. Their Web site says:

Cruising at 30,000 feet can be a rush.

Such is the rush that will be felt by passengers at Fly Lounge a streamlined, destination lounge for the ever-mobile elite.

Transporting guests to new realms with non-stop service nightly, Fly Lounge embodies all the elements of the proverbial private escape.

As a late night connection, Fly Lounge will offer a 5 day a week flight plan to accommodate the most discretionary of tastes. From the early night rendezvous to the Red Eye shuttle, Fly Lounge will offer a roundtrip ticket to paradise.

I have also heard from other folks that there will be some sort of dance/dj component to this space. Anyone else hearing these rumors?

Well at the very least it looks like the building will make for an interesting ‘judging buildings’ discussion soon:
