“Dear PoP,

Anyone have more info on the construction at 4th & I? I believe these are also going to be apartments, right across from the spot where the Giant/apartments were supposed to go. Wish the Giant had broken ground already! If I have to deal with all the noisy construction, I would much rather have a grocery store across the street to reap the benefits of in the end :)”

According to Jonathon O’Connel at The Post:

…the company [AvalonBay] is close to getting underway at another smaller site in the District, near the city’s burgeoning restaurant and entertainment hub on H Street NE. Cox said the company had acquired 318 I Street NE, a site that Broadway Development had planned for condominiums before being foreclosed upon in 2009. AvalonBay plans 140 apartments, which will have easy access to H Street, NoMa and Union Station.

This is the spot that is supposed to become a New Orleans themed space (not to be confused with Tru Orleans coming to 4th and H St, NE). It is the space next to Taylor’s Gourmet Deli.

Despite this setback I continue to be amazed at the rate of new restaurants going into H St, NE. It is amazing. Not sure how long this space’ll be out of commission but I’ll be sure to update when construction progresses.

Kristi Green is the author of the blog DC Wineaux. She further indulges her love of wine in her work at a wine bar on U St NW.

A gray, rainy day on H St NE; one long metro ride and a terrible cab ride later, I arrived at the tiny stairway that leads to SOVA Wine Bar. When I arrived, it was happy hour (5-7:30pm; all beer and wines by the glass half priced). I began with a glass of Punkt Genau Sparkling Gruner Veltliner (Weinviertal, Austria), a refreshing sparkling with a palette of green apples.

Feeling that post-bubbly hunger, I decided it was time for dinner—I entrusted the bartender, Amanda, to choose some cheese and charcuterie for me which I paired with a glass of Ravines Winery Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY). Their food menu is small, though apparently they are in the process of changing it for the Spring/Summer season–there is, however, enough cheese and charcuterie to make any wine nerd happy.

There are twenty or so wines available by the glass and just as many bottled beers. Their signature cocktail list is full of classic staples (like the French 75, one of my favorites). On a chalkboard near the bar you’ll find a list of featured cocktails–I encourage you to try the “Spring Mary,” a prosecco-based cocktail featuring muddled heirloom tomato and basil.

We took a peek at the Queen Vic’s menu back in Feb. The Queen Vic is located at 1206 H Street NE. You can see their final menu here. They’ll be soft opening with a limited menu tomorrow, Thursday 31st. This past week they’ve been open for drinks and I stopped in to snap some photos.

Anyone check them out yet for drinks?

From a press release:

H Street Corridor’s newest addition, Toki Underground, is proud to announce its grand opening on April 1. Come and experience Chef Erik Yang’s vision of bringing the hip alley streets of downtown Taipei to District diners.

The menu is based on Yang’s own family recipes and his experiences working at ramen shops in Taipei. The restaurant seats 25 diners, who will experience Hakata-style ramen and dumplings made from scratch. The restaurant will offer an extensive list of unique sakes, Asian microbrews, hand-crafted cocktails, and popular Asian soft drinks.

Toki Undergound is located at 1234 H Street NE in the heart of the H Street Corridor and is open seven days a week.

I stopped in last night for some photos and the place looks amazing. The attention to detail is freaking spectacular. The space is pretty small so be prepared for lines/wait I’m guessing 7 days a week… Though I hear that in the future it may be possible to order some Ramen downstairs at the Pug. You can see their menu here. Those options at the Pug would be sweet.

More photos including the drinks menu after the jump. (more…)
