ANXO SIGHTING 2 BANNER

From a press release:

What: ANXO, DC’s first cidery and pintxos bar opening in Truxton Circle in late 2015, presents diners with a taste of what’s to come at ANXO Sighting No. 2, a four-course dinner event at Boundary Road on Monday, August 17th, 2015. This follows July’s first ANXO Sighting event at the Dolcezza Gelato Factory, which sold out in less than two days.

ANXO is the child of five founders: Managing Partners Sam Fitz and Rachel Fitz, Executive Chef Brad Walker, Beverage Manager Tim Prendergast and Cooper Sheehan. The team focuses on strong relationships with its cidermakers, both locally and internationally, yielding a highly curated selection of cider. Its also home to DC’s first recipients of the Certified Cicerone® title (Fitz and Prendergast), and the fermentation process of ANXO’s house-made cider will result in an incredibly unique Mid-Atlantic cider. Executive Chef Brad Walker (of Boundary Road) “will honor the Basque culinary traditions of honesty, simplicity, and quality by showcasing local producers’ best efforts.” Chef Walker will be joined in the kitchen by Barcelona-born local chef Alex Vallcorba, currently at Obelisk and formerly at Asador Etxebarri, San Pellegrino’s No. 13 restaurant in the world.

“Dear PoPville,

On my bike ride into work today, I smelled one of the most foul odors ever. It covered blocks and blocks (all near the new Apollo construction site). Just curious if anyone else has contacted you about it. It smelled like super concentrated sewage.”

A reader passes on from AtlasVet:

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of an AtlasVet family member. Dr. Keith de la Cruz died suddenly and unexpectedly earlier this week. Dr. de la Cruz was with AtlasVet for almost 3 years. Prior to that he was part of the Caring Hands family of clinics. Dr. de la Cruz was a client and staff favorite, our moral and medical compass, and a compassionate and dedicated veterinarian. His wisdom made us smarter and his quirky, dry sense of humor picked us up. He was loved and will be terribly missed. (We will relay information about services as they become available.)”

Batter Bowl Bakery opened back in January 2013. Their website says:

“Our Bakery offers daily baked pastries, bread, hand crafted open-faced sandwiches, soups, salad and illy coffee. Every day we bake in a small batch so every time you walk in you are guaranteed quality.”

Looks like they’ll soon be adding beer and wine too!

SweeneyLandless

From a press release:

” The Landless Theatre Company announces the return of it’s award-nominated Sweeney Todd Prog Metal Version at Atlas Performing Arts Center in July, 2015. The production garnered 2015 Helen Hayes Award Nominations for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical (Melissa Baughman), and Outstanding Music Director (Charles W. Johnson).

Stephen Sondheim granted Landless permission to orchestrate the Progressive Metal Version of his musical masterpiece in December, 2013. “Yes, I did indeed give them my okay,” Mr. Sondheim was quoted in NY Times. “Since I believe that what keeps theater alive is its openness to reinterpretation from generation to generation, I look forward to seeing (and hearing) what they do.”

Mark E. Horowitz of The Sondheim Review wrote: “I was more than pleasantly prised to how well the new arrangements and orchestrations worked. They were particularly effective in the underscoring, by turns thrilling, funny and frightening… the range of colors available in the electronic instruments resulted in several hair-raising moments. This was also the fleetest production of Sweeney Todd I’ve seen, with many numbers seemingly performed at twice their typical tempos. I don’t know whether this was part of the prog metal aesthetic or a separate directorial choice, but it certainly energized aspects of the show.” (more…)
