M Street, NW just west of 19th Street

Sweet Diablo opened at 19th and M St, NW back in Aug. 2012. Their website says:

Sweet Diablo brings Portugal’s corner café to downtown Washington, DC. Opened by partners Rosa Silva and Nuno Geraldes Freire in 2012, Sweet Diablo celebrates the European tradition of creating culinary experiences through artisanal confections, freshly made breads, fine cheeses and meats, and farm fresh produce. Life is to be savored, and it starts with what is on your plate.

At Sweet Diablo, we prepare our menu in the Portuguese tradition of using beautiful ingredients in simple combinations to bring out amazing flavors. With recipes created by Chef Michael Guerrieri, our Paoninis are a play on the Panini sandwich combining Portuguese meats and cheeses on freshly baked ciabatta to create distinct flavors that will captivate your mouth. Our soups and salads create a lighter play on some of these traditional ingredients.

We brew Illy coffee to serve alongside our Pastéis de Nata, a Portuguese custard tart whose tradition dates back to 1837 where it was first created in a Lisbon monastery. All of our breads and pastries are baked freshly each morning.

Our Not Your Usual Cheescake (NYUC) is pure temptation. Made without eggs, and topped with a fruit sauce, each bite is delectable.

I know this reeks of gefilte-jacking but the menu sounds pretty good. Though not clear if they will provide a surrogate relative/family friend to rant about politics and gossip about which relatives are on drugs… From a press release:

To celebrate Passover, DGS Delicatessen Chef Barry Koslow will offer a modern rendition of the seder, incorporating elements of the traditional holiday meal and adding seasonal ingredients. Koslow adds bone marrow to the matzo balls instead of schmaltz, and the traditional “bitter herb” is incorporated into a crust on halibut, which stands in for the seder staple gefilte fish. The sacrificial lamb is braised and accompanied by a spring bounty of crispy artichokes, peas and carrots, and a modern take on haroset finishes out the meal in the form of an apple, rhubarb and walnut crumble with cardamom ice cream. Beverage director and general manager Brian Zipin has paired each course with complementary wines from around the world, including an Israeli Cabernet Sauvignon and an heirloom Ice Cider from Vermont.

The Passover Menu will be available March 25th through March 31st during dinner for $40, or $60 with wine pairings.

UPDATE: From a new press release:

Dupont Circle upscale gastropub The Gryphon will open its doors to the public on Wednesday, March 13 for both bar and dinner service, starting at 8 p.m. Due to construction delays, the new sports lounge will push back their opening date to accommodate hungry Washingtonians in time for March Madness.

A lot more info on the Gryphon coming to the former Heritage India space in Dupont. While there will be a preview March 2nd for the DC Leprechaun Lap the Gryphon’s normal hours will start sometime “mid-March”. I’ll update when an exact date is known. From a press release:

On March 2nd, Dupont Circle welcomes The Gryphon, the marriage of a gastropub and an upscale sports bar. The 5,000 square-foot eatery boasts the social dining atmosphere of a restaurant, the heart of a pub and the view of a stadium. Executive Chef Joseph Evans of brother restaurant Lost Society has crafted a hearty, refined menu that modernizes the classic bar bite. Gaming accents and vintage decor evoke the grand, private lounges of the 1920s and 30s, while contemporary touches such as an interactive, state-of-the-art integrated media system will ensure that guests catch every play from any spot in the house – no bleacher seats here. The restaurant will open to Washingtonians as part of the DC Leprechaun Lap, a massive bar crawl featuring over 20 Dupont establishments.

The Gryphon is where Washingtonians will go to indulge their competitive side and unwind in style. The eatery will feature two bars, 192 seats and standing capacity for 350. Sporting events – from mainstream to middle-of-nowhere – will screen for guests on 31 televisions located throughout the establishment. The DJ booth, located behind the back bar, is housed in what was previously the vault of the historic Hamilton National Bank – a prior tenant of the space.

Back in Dec. 2010 the Lucky Brand clothing store closed at 1739 Connecticut Avenue, NW. We finally know who’ll be taking over the space – Smashburger. Washington Business Journal reports:

“The chain was issued permits on Wednesday to install on the front of the building [1739 Connecticut Ave. NW] a set of 14-inch “internally-illuminated, raceway-mounted Smashburger channel letters” — in other words, a sign.”
