Well worth a visit. World Press Photo Exhibition 2017:
“The World Press Photo Exhibition represents the year’s best visual journalism and is seen by 4 million people in 100 cities across the globe. Lightscape is bringing the Exhibition to Washington DC, home of the people and institutions that drive thinking and decision-making on the issues behind the photographs. We are working with leading universities, think-tanks, embassies, international-, media- and civil society organizations to tell the stories behind the photos.
The images cover a broad range of topics and explore refugees/migration, conflicts in the Middle-East, climate change, race and policing, gender identity, and the human impact of the Zika virus, but also the US Rio Olympic team, National Geographic images of pandas, Usain Bolt’s golden smile, Chinese gymnasts and a Spanish cultural festival. This is photojournalism at its best and most thought-provoking.
The venue is the Dupont Underground, the abandoned trolley station beneath Dupont Circle. This massive space will house 22 projectors casting 13′ images of the year’s most important stories, a wall of large prints of WPP prize-winning photographs and a retrospective of 60 years of Photos of the Year. There will be side-exhibitions from NPR, the International Women’s Media Foundation and 2x WPP, Pulitzer and Anja Niedringhaus awardee Stephanie Sinclair.
The goal is simple: to use photojournalism to humanize complex issues, to bring people together to discuss and to learn, to support informed debate about the issues facing our communities, countries and the world around us.”

“Dear PoPville,
My apartment window faces the Hotel Carlyle, and a guest at the Carlyle Hotel deliberately opened his blinds and pleasured himself in front of the window for no less than 10 minutes on Wednesday 11/8. I called the police and spoke extensively with the hotel management, including sending them photographic evidence of the incident. I am 100% sure this was a deliberate action on this man’s part, intended to intimidate.
I am incredibly disappointed that the hotel’s response was to do the absolute minimum. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Do you happen to know what that incessant loud banging in the dupont area is? If it werent happening over and over for days, i would think it was a car crash. Found this (photo above) and it might be the culprit at the corner of 20th and Florida, next to Glen’s market, skanska construction.
I should clarify that I’m not complaining per se, but would prefer they knock it off after 7pm.”

The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.
Last night (November 8), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) presented plans to make Massachusetts Avenue NW “a safer corridor for vehicles and pedestrians”. DDOT showed Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2B/Dupont that accidents occurred much more frequently in the project area – between Dupont Circle and Rock Creek Park – than normal. The frequency of rear end collisions and “side swipes” was especially high in the area, the presenters said.

As a remedy, DDOT proposes to start with the condition of the pavement. ANC2B saw evidence that well over half of the area scored “poor” on a Pavement Condition Index. This section of Massachusetts Avenue often has uneven pavement and worn pedestrian crossings, in spite of the fact that it also hosts some of Washington’s most exclusive clubs and 34 embassies.
The presenters also unveiled plans to reduce the width of the four traffic lanes in this area from 12.5 feet across to 11 feet. With the extra space, an unraised central pedestrian median, six feet wide, would be added. Commissioner Daniel Warwick (district 02) asked why there couldn’t been even narrower lanes and two-way protected bike lanes in the center. Commissioner Mike Silverstein (district 06) pointed out that this part of Massachusetts Avenue was the normal route of the Vice-President’s motorcade. The implication was that the Secret Service was likely to veto any plan that interfered with its ability to maneuver in traffic. (more…)

We first learned that Super Pollo was coming to the former Pazyryk Rug Gallery space last January.
You can see their Virginia menus here.

From MPD:
“Please be advised, 2D is currently working three (3) possible robbery incidents in the area of 21st and O and 23rd and O, involving a similar lookout and modus operandi. The lookout in each incident is for 3 B/M juveniles, last seen wearing hoodies. In each incident, the subjects asked the complainants to borrow their cell phones and subsequently took the cell phones, or attempted to. No weapons were mentioned and no injuries were reported. If any has any information regarding these incidents please call 202-727-9099.”
