A little over a month ago we noted that the Church at 10th and Monroe St, NW in Columbia Heights was for sale for $2,000,000. It’s already under contract. Updates when plans become known for the space.

“Dudley Saunders’ IN THESE BOXES is an uncommon – and uncanny – mix of live music, narratives and video art that explores the human need to keep the dead from disappearing by holding on to their things. He asks us to reach out locally in DC for photos of the objects people have inherited from loved ones and can’t let go of. His performance incorporates images collected from the local community. Performance, one night only, Saturday March 8, 2014 at 8pm. Tickets $8
BloomBars presents a One Night Performance of Dudley Saunders’ IN THESE BOXES located at 3222 11th St NW Washington, DC on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 8p.m.- 9:30p.m.
Personal contributions – gathered from DC communities- will be incorporated into video art for Dudley’s DC performance of IN THESE BOXES at Bloombars; a combination of video, song and stories that imagines the lives of lost people through the objects they left behind. In the piece, Dudley takes 12 objects left behind by the dead and weaves each of them into a video hallucination of the missing life. As he sings their stories at the front of stage, the world of the vanished comes to life on the screen behind him.
The piece is inspired by his own AIDS-era history: “In the fall of 1991, my two ex-lovers died within two months of each other. But what made it worse was realizing that everyone who remembered us together was also dead. Their few objects were the only evidence that they had existed, and had meaning no-one else could understand: how can you explain why an old spoon is important?”
Most of us, especially those whose lives are inherently risky because of who they are or where they live, have had some version of this experience. So Dudley has created a unique online/community site and invites all DC residents to participate. For the BloomBars performance, Dudley, BloomBars and local partners are asking community residents to take photos of the objects they have inherited and can’t let go, and then post them to Instagram with the hash-tag #InTheseBoxes or send them to directly to [email protected]. These personal contributions will then be incorporated into the final video art piece in the BloomBars show; additionally, they will live in perpetuity online at www.InTheseBoxes.com, in what he calls “a social media cemetery”. In these two ways, these emotional objects can become part of a living piece of art, rather than simply moldering alone in people’s closets.
Dudley’s songs won the Out Music Award for Best Album and his last solo performance piece was named “Best Musical” by New York Press.”

Any word on what happened this morning in front of the Target in Columbia Heights? I was on my way to work and there was a dead body on the sidewalk, police had not roped off the area as of 8:10am.
Black male 20 to 30 years old, in a black jacket, lying face down on the sidewalk in a small pool of blood. One cop standing next to him but people were still walking past. I walked within 4 feet of the body.
I didn’t check to see if he was actually dead, but there were no paramedics and the cop wasn’t interacting with him at all. Between the stillness of the victim, unnatural body position, the blood, and the indifference of the cop, it all added up to a dead body to me. I’d love to be wrong.”

3431 13th Street, NW at Monroe
Thanks to a reader for sending word about the for sale sign out front of the Mt. Rona Baptist Church at the corner of 13th and Monroe St, NW. It’s not listed in MRIS yet but I imagine it’ll be over a million or two. The Church was a bit damaged in the great quake of ’11.
A particularly rough one all around from the Columbia Heights list serve:
“I live in a apartment complex with a foyer entrance. We have had a homeless lady sleeping in our entrance and when she is able to, she sleeps in the actual building. This has been going on for several years and it is a huge problem, she also urinates in our hallways and has threatened people in the past. In the past myself and other tenants have contacted MPD and homeless shelters about this. The homeless people just came and brought her an extra blanket, not the solution we were looking for. MPD said that she needs to be served with a Notice of Barring which I and another tenant served her with (she refused the document) but it’s still effective.
So fast forward to today, she’s again sleeping in foyer and I call 911, and 2 police officers show up and I explain the situation to them, I then get told that the document is not effective because another officer’s name was on it he could not do anything.
So is the document that I tried to serve her with useless? I and other tenants are at our wits end with dealing with this problem. Has anyone encountered something like this before? How did you deal with it?”
La Dulce Noche has opened up at 14th and Perry Pl, NW right next door to La Molienda. Back in October we learned they would be ‘Serving international food. with an Occupancy of 95’. Anyone happen to stop in?
14th and Quincy Street, NW
Last we checked back in December we knew good things were coming to Lyman’s Tavern coming to the former laundromat space next to Red Derby. Well I got to take a peek over the weekend and holy cow this place is looking sweet. I haven’t been this excited about a new bar since, well, Red Derby opened. I’m happy to say it’s looking like Lyman’s will be a worthy neighbor to the Derby. This is another real deal non pretentious neighborhood bar. The space is dominated by a huge wooden bar. In the back there will be a little stage for music and three pinball machines. In the way way back is a small kitchen. And the best news – they open in March. Stay tuned for an exact date.
