“Looked like the impending apocalypse the other night in the produce section at the Columbia Heights Giant. It’s often bad, but I usually don’t see completely empty shelves…”

UPDATE from Giant:

“We apologize for the stock conditions captured in the photo. When this photo was taken, there was a mechanical problem in the refrigerated case where we display our bagged salads. The case has been repaired and is operating properly at this time. We regret any inconvenience to our customers.

We have brought the community’s comments to the attention of our store managers and staff. We know that our customers have many options to shop for groceries and want to ensure that they find a pleasing experience and well-stocked store when shopping with Giant.”

Construction for 40 New Condos Starts on Chapin Street just west of 14th

“I just walked past some new construction on Chapin Street, N.W. (just off of 14th behind View 14th). There’s a long-time vacant lot there that’s being turned into condos. I asked some of the guys what was going to be built and they pointed me to an older man who said condos. I asked how many and he said 40 condos.”

Another reader adds:

“My boyfriend and I asked them what was getting built and they said, “a 6-story condo building”.”

Real Progress at Sherman and Harvard – Now Who’s Coming?

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what’s going in on the southest corner of Sherman and Harvard, across from the liquor store and the gas station? The way they’ve made a patio and put in a little fence, it looks like they might be making a sidewalk cafe (wishful thinking?)… There are permits in the windows, but up a bit too high for the casual passerby to see what’s up!”

Ed. Note: We’ve been monitoring progress here since 2010 – still progressing! Before 2010, this is the space that used to be Coco Libre and Nani Kafe before that.  Looking forward to seeing who’s next.

The Real “Last Christmas Tree”?

“This morning in Columbia Heights, I walked past what I believe to be the last Christmas tree of 2013, five months after the holidays. I can’t tell if the person was too stubborn to get rid of a tree that still had the tiniest bit of green or if this is just appalling laziness. Anyway, I think you’ll be hard-pressed to get a “Last Christmas Tree” submission later than May 13.”

Hahaha at this point I think it is almost certain another will be found in June…

5th Grade Students Open Photography Exhibit at The Coupe Tues. Night

“What is worth preserving for posterity? 5th graders in Ms. Ronda Scott’s class at Raymond Education Campus explored this question while learning about the role that conservators and photographers play in preserving and maintaining the U.S. Capitol. On Tuesday, May 6th at 6:30pm, students will open an exhibit of their photographs at The Coupe restaurant (3415 11th St NW). Students will lead a 30 minute presentation about this project which included several lessons and a trip to the Capitol led by Live It Learn It (LILI) and a photography workshop taught by Charles Badal, photographer with the Architect of the Capitol. Students were challenged with capturing elements that are worth preserving of the Capitol, their neighborhood, their school and their personal lives using cameras on loan from Nikon Professional Services. The result is an exhibition in which the Brumidi Corridors of the Capitol are juxtaposed with a prized Wrestlemania t-shirt since students thought both should be preserved. (more…)
