CliftonSale1910

This is awesome – thanks to a reader for sending:

“You listed an apartment @ 1201 Clifton St NW [$1,875/Mo], for a 2 bedroom, 1bath earlier this week. But check this ad from June 4, 1910 from Washington Times. Same place but the whole house for $7,750 and came with gas or electric lighting.

Also 1211 Clifton St, the home on the far left of the original ad just sold this past Sept, 2015 for $1.4 million. So $7,750 in 1910 – $1.4million in 2015, talk about return in your investment!”

room_11_missed_connection

“A missed connection Wednesday 10/7 at Room 11 bar –

I (a woman) was in the last seat toward the back and you (a man) sat next to me– taking the last seat available at the bar. You biked up from Logan Circle (or work maybe…) on your cruiser and ordered the pork chops and a cocktail you didn’t love because of the Sambuca…. . We were talking about the drinks, Bad Saint, the Pope, biking and San Francisco. I was meeting a blind date and ended up leaving the bar without being able to tell you I’d be up for talking more if you are. Reach out if you see this—it would be great to re-connect.”

A reader reports:

“I just read that El Latino is leaving! I’m going to miss that wonderful smell. A few days ago I noticed that Claws & Paws, the pet food shop near 11th and Lamont (next door to what used to be Arthur’s), was closed and everything was removed from the store, except for plumbing and cleaning supplies. Yesterday it was completely empty. It’s unclear if they’re just renovating, moved, or went out of business. I always enjoyed passing by and seeing the cat who lived in the store and always hung out in the window. I would love to know what happened to the business and my cat friend.”

A reader reports:

“Every few years, readers would write you and ask “where is that great smell coming from on 11th and Lamont Street in Columbia Heights?” The answer of course was El Latino Bakery.

It saddens me to report that El Latino Bakery is no more. My source from the block said that rent was raised and so they decided it was a good time to move to a bigger space in Maryland. They even had to cut the bars and wall in the front to move the ovens out.”

This is incredibly sad, and inevitable news… It follows news of the closing of Arthur’s across the street. I look forward to learning who will take over the space and I believe there is a strong likelihood it will be something cool – but now is time to grieve. RIP that sweet, sweet smell.
