Been getting tons of queries about the Meridian Hill Park fountain status – here’s an update from the National Park Service:
“We had to turn off the fountain over the weekend while we worked to repair a water main pipe that burst last week.
We also discovered an electronic issue is causing the fountain not to function properly – it isn’t regulating the incoming water quite right, and the automatic mechanism that shuts the pump down isn’t working, so if we let the fountain run unattended, there’s a chance it could pump itself dry.
The good news is, the pump is running properly, and we can separate the upper section from the lower cascades, so we’ve turned off the upper section and are running the lower section during the day while we work on fixing the issue. You will probably see National Park Service staff and the fountain specialists we’ve brought in working on the fountain if you’re in the park. We hope to get the cascades up and running this week.“

The Gilded Age, from the 1870s until the 1910s, was a unique period in Washington’s history. The city attracted many nouveaux riches who were drawn by the fact that upper-class Washington society in those days was wide open to anyone with lots of money, a circumstance not found in other major Eastern cities. Of all the wealthy people who moved to Washington to exert power and influence in the Gilded Age, one of the most powerful and influential was a woman, Mary Foote Henderson (1846-1931), who turned her City Beautiful dreams into reality along upper 16th Street. “I was flying solo, but everything about this 24-seat, no-reservation spot made me feel like family. Credit Filipino-American chef Tom Cunanan and co-owners Genevieve Villamora (the most gracious host I met all year) and Nick Pimentel, who’ve made this place their passion project. Their food is personal, but it’s so much more than just dishes they ate as kids. Bad Saint is the kind of place I spend all year searching for.”

“5 civs in auto tx area Hosps. 2 were trapped. 4 FF’s will be evaluated. Engine Was enroute to reported fire.”
“Fire truck accident with entrapment Holmead Place & Monroe St NW. No FD personnel trapped. 2 civilians in other vehicle. Unit was on call.”

A reader passes on a letter sent to the Mayor’s Office:
“I went out again last night, August 10th, to review the locations where I had observed streetlights out the night before. I went east on Park Road NW from 16th Street to 14th Street, NW; headed south to Columbia Road, then proceeded north along 14th Street NW. I extended my walk further north to Arkansas, then went east to Georgia Avenue before returning on Arkansas west to 16th Street, north to Newton Street, east to 17th / Mt. Pleasant Street.
My observations are listed below as to what locations I observed
