The purpose of this block party is to facilitate positive communication between the DC community and police officers. We worked with several people that felt the dialogue needed to be guided, at least initially, and so we will be starting the event with a panel discussion. We will also have several people performing during the event to help spark progressive conversation about how to take action.

If anyone who lives along upper 14th Street haven’t already seen this video, it’s worth taking a look.

It’s shocking that four men could plan a homicide at a busy gas station, visibly put guns into their pants, run an entire block, murder someone, and flee the scene without being caught.  We haven’t seen anything this brazen along these few blocks in years, probably since 2010.  I suspect some of your readers may think this sort of incident is common on the 3400-3600 blocks of 14th Street, but it most certainly isn’t.

This incident was a result of less aggressive policing along this stretch, the elimination of undercover vice, and, in my view, a lack of interest among our politicians in upper 14th Street.  I emailed Councilmember Nadeau about this; I explained that I believe the problem is the growing tolerance of the crack cocaine trade and a lack of pressure on MPD to have more of a presence in this area.

I told her that I believe her agenda that so often concerns national progressive issues isn’t going to help us prevent homicides.  Her office’s response to these sorts of emails has often been that the meager money she’s secured for Clean Teams and a Main Street program, or that a federal law closing the gun show loophole, will have the effect of interdicting homicides in Columbia Heights.  Invariably, her office lists her accomplishments or refers us to her newsletter. “The Fourth District is currently working a shooting in the 5100 block of Georgia Ave N.W., where an adult male was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. The Violent Crimes Branch is handling the investigation. We are asking any citizens that may have information relative to this event to contact detectives on 202-645-9600 or 202-727-9099.”

Man Sexually Assaulted and Robbed near Meridian Hill Park

“The Metropolitan Police Department seeks the public’s assistance in identifying and locating two suspects in reference to a First Degree Sexual Abuse and Armed Robbery (Knife) offense that occurred in the 2400 block of 15th Street, Northwest on Sunday, July 31, 2016.

At approximately 2:00 am, an adult male was walking in the area of 2400 block of 15th Street Northwest, when he was approached by the suspects who forced him to some nearby bushes. While displaying a knife, the first suspect sexually assaulted and robbed the victim of his property.

Gun Recovered in Columbia Heights at 7:45pm

“On today’s date at approximately 7:45 p.m., patrol members of the Third District conducted a field investigation in the 3000 block of 14th St. N.W. The investigation of the members led to the on scene recovery of a handgun and the arrest of the individual who was in possession of the handgun.

Anyone who has additional information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

“On today’s date at approximately 12:30 AM, MPD units were dispatched for the sound of gunshots to the 1400 block of Fairmont St., NW. Officers located numerous shell casings and damage to several vehicles. At this time, there are no confirmed injuries to any persons.”
