Sundress Fest is this Sunday at Wonderland!!

“The Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of Transportation would like to inform the public of scheduled street closures in conjunction with the 2017 Sundress Festival scheduled for Sunday, May 7, 2017.

The following streets will be closed from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

§ Kenyon Street, NW from 11st Street, NW to 13th Street, NW (only local traffic will be allowed)”

Columbia Heights is getting a Biker Bar, as in #BikeDC Biker Bar (with doner kebab)

A couple days we learned that Acre 121 would be closing May 1st in Columbia Heights and a new spot from the Hilton Brothers would be coming to the space in a couple of months. That new space is going to be a biker bar! Not Harley Davidson but more like Public. I spoke with Arturo Zaloga who is the visionary behind the project and he explained that the bar is inspired by European bicycling culture. Think Amsterdam and “French nouveau meets Flash Art”. I don’t really know what “French nouveau meets Flash Art” means but I do know there will be Doner Kebab and that is very very good news indeed! And knowing the Hilton brothers other spots, I’m pretty confident the decor will be pretty sweet as well.

Oh yeah I almost forgot the Belgian beers. The bar will be “very beer oriented”. The vision is to have the menu split between Belgian beers and cheap local beers. That way there is “something for everyone.” There will be cocktails as well but this is a beer spot – so of course there will be beer cocktails too. Did I mention the Doner Kebab? Stay tuned for many more details as they get closer to opening in a couple months.

Acre 121 Closing in Columbia Heights May 1st Renovations and New Collaboration with Hilton Brothers Coming Soon

End of a mini-era – Acre 121 took over the former Commonwealth (remember Commonwealth?!?) space back in 2011. And May 1st they will close for a couple months for renovations. When they reopen, there will be a completely new restaurant bar collaboration with the current owners and Ian and Eric Hilton. Ian and Eric have one or two other spots around town. Stay tuned for many more details but in the meantime get your last taste of Acre 121 this week!

“Is this PODS company criminally liable for their “smash and run” destruction?”

“Dear PoPville,

On the north side of the 1200 block of Girard Street NW. The PODS company made three separate trips to their “Pod” to try to collect it and to inflict the catastrophic damage to this tree. When confronted, the driver of the truck just got in his vehicle and drove off.

I have included photos of the damage all around the “pod” and the contact info for the person who obtained a public space permit for the “pod” in the first place.

I have reached out to DC’s Urban Forestry to come out right away to try to cut away the damaged limbs and save this tree.

But what about this company and their cavalier destruction of city property and an undeniable public good like a young and growing street tree? Is this PODS company criminally liable for their “smash and run” destruction? (more…)

The Columbia Heights Farmers Market, now entering its seventh season, will bring fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, coffee, meats, eggs, cheese, and prepared food to the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza from 9am to 1pm every Saturday through December. Swing by this Saturday and say hi to your favorite farmer, pick up some tacos or dumplings, and stay for the joyous jams of Lady Hatchet!

A reader reports Sunday evening:

“Yesterday evening I received a call from a friend asking me if I could come to her family’s restaurant and check out her uncle (I am in the medical field). I went over there and found out that her uncle, who is visiting here on vacation from Vietnam, was walking around 7pm on Hiatt Place (between Park rd and Irving St). He was approached by 4 young African American males and out of nowhere was knocked out by a punch to the face. He was further injured by hitting the concrete. Someone called 911 when they saw an unconscious man on the street. Before the police arrived he woke up after being unconscious for an unknown amount of time. He had a period of amnesia while walking around afterwards and was found near the restaurant. The only thing taken from him was an old phone (his money and wallet were not taken).

The assumption is this was a case of young men playing the “knockout game”. The victim did not know the men and had not spoken to them, The police filed a report and I personally drove him to the hospital to get a head CT for a possible epidural hematoma. (more…)
