JAMES BOND, ALL-AMERICAN HERO:

“The International Spy Museum
800 F Street Northwest
August 22, 2013 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Cost: $10

When Ian Fleming created the character James Bond he made him English to the core, from his Aston Martin to his quick wit and loyalty to the Queen.

Historian Jonathan Nashel contends that as Bond has become a global phenomenon something very curious has happened to 007: he has become an all-American hero. Nashel argues that as Bond was idolized by millions of American men during the Cold War, he set the standard for many of them — including President John F. Kennedy. Bond showed how a man should carry himself and especially how he should act when confronted with danger. And English or American, would James Bond have been as fascinating without the evildoers in his films?

Nashel will show how the evolution of Bond and his responses to these villains and threats influenced the values and morals behind US Cold War policy and affected the image of red, white, and blue Cold War masculinity.”

For about four years we were taunted with Coming Soon signs for Wagamama in the old Olson’s bookstore at 418 7th Street, NW. Even though we learned Wagamama had pulled out in Oct. 2012 we were still subject to the giant Wagamama lady looking down on us:

Alas, all remnants have finally been removed. Maybe a new tenant will soon be taking over this prime space?

Thanks to TommyZ for sending the photo above. He writes:

“For the last few months I have noticed construction crews gutting the old NPR building on 635 Massachusetts Ave. NW, but today I noticed they started knocking the building down with a wrecking ball. Any ideas what is going to replace it? Also, curious if its cheaper to demolish and start from scratch vs. renovating it?”

It’s going to become a brand new building that has been leased to the Arnold & Porter law firm. NPR’s new home is at 1111 North Capitol Street, NE in NoMa.
