“Pay-By-Space Parking Makes its Debut in Penn Quarter and Chinatown”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced today it is launching a new, simpler way to pay for and manage parking in the Penn Quarter and Chinatown areas of Washington, DC.

Pay-By-Space parking will improve the parking experience for vehicle drivers. Pay-By-Space means drivers will now park in defined spaces, read the four- or five-digit space number on space marker posts, and then enter the number at the payment kiosks, or on their mobile devices with Parkmobile. There is no need to display a receipt on a dashboard.

Between October 13 and October 27, 2015, DDOT will roll out Pay-By-Space parking in the area from E Street to H Street, NW and 3rd Street to 11th Street, NW, as shown on the map above. (more…)

Don Rockwell confirms the news that’s been rumored for a while – Oya has closed at 777 9th Street, NW. Oya’s website says:

“OYA IS TRANSFORMING…BOE

After more than a decade OYA is closing a chapter on Sept 20 and reopening a new chapter in Winter 2015 as BOE.

We were the venue for numerous celebrations, met wonderful families, made forever relationships, and so many wonderful employees, managers and chefs. There are simply too many people to say thank you to and so many incredible experiences to recount.

About a year ago we learned that La Colombe had plans for a second DC cafe in Chinatown. Though they had hoped to open early 2015 – happy to see plans still continue. From the Washington Business Journal‘s permit patrol:

“900 Sixth St. NW: Interior work only in this Sixth and Eye streets building to ready a ground-floor space for incoming coffeehouse La Colombe.”

“DC Public Library Foundation’s Maker-In-Residence Program Ready to Launch”

“This summer the DC Public Library Foundation (DCPLF) started it’s new Maker-in-Residence (MIR) program. The MIR program is a one-year residency that gives makers, designers, artists and community hobbyists an opportunity to explore, create, and share innovative projects using the library’s tools and resources in the Labs @ DCPL, the DC Public Library’s MakerSpace at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.DCPLF, along with generous support from the Friends of Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library, have given a stipend to two artists, Billy Friebele and Mike Iacovone (both MFA graduates of Maryland Institute College of Art), who will create one significant work of art over the course of the residency, and will also host talks, teach classes and provide on-site training and guidance for anyone interested in the MakerSpace technologies such as robotics, 3D printers, wearable electronics, furniture making and design. Beef ‘n Bread Deli from Owners of Wiseguys Pizza Soft Opens in Chinatown

Back in July we learned:

“Beef n Bread is a fast casual down to earth sandwich shop inspired from living in Boston (what pizza is to New Yorkers, Roast beef is to Bostonians).”

They had their first soft opening on Tuesday and will have another starting at 11:30am on Wednesday. They’ll be open until they “run out of meat and bread”. Stay tuned for regular hours next week from 11am to 10pm. And in the future we’ll see Breakfast and Late Night hours too. In the meantime – looking forward to hearing what folks think of the sandwiches!

“New tavern will operate a cigar lounge serving food and alcohol with a seating capacity of 16 patrons. Total occupancy load of 29. Entertainment Endorsement will provide a DJ and solo performances.”

The BURN by Rocky Patel Facebook Page for their Naples, Florida locations says:

“our evolved cigar lounge is a luxury experience drawing on Mediterranean, Asian, and Cuban cultures.”

The Crime Museum opened on May 23, 2008. The museum’s conception began when Mr. John Morgan, successful entrepreneur and respected attorney, was amongst the tourist crowds on a trip to Alcatraz Island, the former federal prison in San Francisco, CA that’s now a national park. After his tour of the prison, he decided that a museum that discussed the history of crime, punishment, and crime scene investigation was needed. His goal was to make it interactive and to also honor law enforcement. He partnered with his friend John Walsh, host of America’s Most Wanted to bring his vision to reality.
