“Dear PoPville,

BREAKING News! Sixth Engine also closing on Mass and 4th. It’s a bloodbath! Apparently something is moving in, so it won’t be empty long. It’s a real bummer, it was a great after work spot.

Ed. Note: Update from another reader: “I can confirm Sixth’s Engine’s closing. I was at the closing party last night.”

438 Massachusetts Ave, NW

I’ve worked in Chinatown/Mount Vernon for about eight years now, and the recent spate of business closings is jarring! Just got word the Starbucks next to the Walmart is closing, which is hot on the heels of the Au Bon Pain and Capital One closing on the same block. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Last night around 9:30pm I was riding a northbound Yellow line train home and had a frightening experience. When our train came to a stop into Gallery Place we heard 15-20 loud gunshot-like bangs from the car in front of us. As the train doors opened everyone in the station and cars sprinted to an exit or dove under their seats– it was total chaos. (more…)

800 F Street, NW

From a press release:

“Award-winning restaurateur Ashok Bajaj of Knightsbridge Restaurant Group is pleased to announce the January 2019 anticipated opening of his latest venture, Olivia, at 800 F Street, NW, Washington, DC 20004. Olivia replaces Bajaj’s American brasserie concept Nopa Kitchen + Bar, which opened in April 2013 with excellent reviews from critics and patrons, as well as being lauded in the 2018 Michelin Guide for Washington, D.C. To give guests a taste of what awaits them in January, a daily special from Olivia’s upcoming menu will be featured during the month of December at Nopa Kitchen + Bar. Inquiring minds are encouraged to stop by the restaurant and sample tastes of what is in store for the new year, when Olivia opens in January, after a year in the making of this new concept.

Olivia, which comes from the Latin origin, meaning “olive tree”, will offer rustic Mediterranean cuisine that is inspired by the flavors of Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, Greece and beyond. The new, harmonious menu pays homage to the many flavors and recipes sourced from the Mediterranean and Northern Africa. The menu will be comprised of a nice balance of innovative cuisine and traditional fare. A large portion of the menu will be produce-driven. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I unfortunately have food intolerances that require me to be on a restrictive, low FODMAP diet, in order to manage a long term digestive problem. It is NOT a lifestyle choice. Most restaurants are excellent at helping me to find something suitable. Chaplin’s Restaurant did a great job a few nights ago.

Last night I asked our server at Scott’s on F St NW (formerly Co Co Sala) if they had anything without onion or garlic, and I was told that everything had those things, but maybe the nuts and olives starter would be okay. (more…)
