Shooting Homicide Saturday Night in Brentwood; 1:35am two men “assaulted by a group of 7-8 suspects…both victims sustained lacerations” in Chinatown; 5pm Shooting Sunday after “verbal dispute with the suspects over littering from their vehicle” in Michigan Park

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Saturday, March 23, 2019 in the 1200 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast.

At approximately 10:26 pm, members of the Fifth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, in the 1300 block of Saratoga Avenue, Northeast. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 23-year-old Rafiq Hawkins, of Northeast, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.”

“On 3/24/19, Officers from the First District responded to the 700 block of 5th Street NW for a report of a large group fight. Once on the scene, officers found two adult male victims reporting that they had been assaulted by a group of 7-8 suspects. The victims reported that the assault occurred at approximately 1:35 a.m. The victims indicated that they were walking in the area when a group of 7-8 suspects began to follow them. The suspects were taunting and harassing the victims. When the victims turned to confront the suspects, they were assaulted. One of the suspects was armed with a knife. As a result, both victims sustained lacerations. The victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. At this time, there is no usable lookout for the suspects.

The incident is under active investigation by First District Detectives. “On Sunday March 24, 2019, Fourth District units responded to the 800 block of Crittenden ST NE, at about 5:00pm, in reference to a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located a victim, suffering from a gunshot wound the arm. The victim reports that he was in a verbal dispute with the suspects over littering from their vehicle. The situation then escalated when a passenger exited the suspect’s vehicle and fired two shots at the victim. The victim was conscious and breathing. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspects were driving a 2018 white Nissan Pathfinder, with a Massachusetts tag: 9GS534. It was occupied by 2 black males and 1 black female.
