Just before 9am a reader asked:

“Why can you not drive by the capital today?”

Replies included: “There appears to be an unauthorized aircraft in the vicinity of the Capitol”

and

“White House and Capitol both currently on lock down.”

Update: 9:11am “crowds are finally moving on the Capitol grounds, congressional buildings reopening.”

“Dear PoPville,

Such an odd thing to wake up to early this morning [3/3:30am] – a black Volkswagen was parked outside on the 300 block of C Street SE blasting Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road”- live version with audience screaming and all- on repeat, for 15 straight minutes.

We called non-emergency hotline after about 10 minutes, and of course the car only played the song one more time after that.

Was anyone else in Capitol Hill stirred from their slumber thinking there was a big party outside?

Update: And saw the news today Sam Hunt was arrested for a DUI yesterday. A weird tribute?”

I think the answer is pretty clear – a current day: (more…)

Thanks to Valerie for sending: “Buffalo & Bergen’s Capitol Hill location has a sign! Any idea when it’s opening? The sign actually went up about a week ago.”

Almost exactly a year ago we learned that:

Buffalo & Bergen, the Union Market maker of knishes, bagels and cocktails, has a liquor license public hearing notice in the window of the (downstairs) former home of Bagels & Baguettes at 3rd and Mass NE.”

A taste of what to look forward to: (more…)

From an email:

“After three weeks of weaving work, the Patrick Dougherty sculpture at U.S. Botanic Garden is complete. The sculpture, woven from thousands of plant saplings and branches, stands 15-feet-tall and 25-feet-wide. Dougherty has titled the sculpture “O Say Can You See.” (more…)

Thanks to Joe for sending. Pitango Gelato opened up on Capitol Hill next to Peregrine in the old Greenworks space back in 2011. They closed their Logan Circle location back in 2016 but opened up a popular cafe in Adams Morgan back in 2017. They also still have a location in Penn Quarter which opened up back in 2010.

Updates when we learn what becomes of this space.

Thanks to Heather for sending from MPD:

“At approximately 6:10 pm, near the intersection of 5th & G St SE, a victim was approached by five juvenile males, one of who grabbed her purse from her hands. The suspect then dumped the contents on the ground, taking an iPhone 8 (Rose Gold) and a Tiffany blue wallet. The suspects then fled on foot. The primary suspect is described as a black male, approximately 15 years old, 5’3-5’5″, thin build, with short hair.

A few minutes later, in the 500 block of 4th St SE, another victim observed several juvenile males jumping on the hood of a vehicle. The victim stopped her vehicle to confront the juveniles, at which point a suspect struck her in the face and took her vehicle. (more…)
