“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with Intent to Kill and a First Degree Cruelty to Children offense that occurred on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, in the 800 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast.

At approximately 4:51 pm, members of the Special Operation Division were flagged down by citizens, in reference to a juvenile victim being assaulted, at the listed location. Officers apprehended the suspect. The suspect and victim were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

On Wednesday, February 12, 2020, 28 year-old Idreis Alexander Augustus, of Springfield, VA, was arrested and charged with Assault With Intent to Kill, First Degree Cruelty to Children, and Destruction of Property.”

“This evening at approximately 4:55 PM, a man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs assaulted a young child who was walking with a parent near 9th St NE and Maryland Ave NE. Several passersby assisted the child’s mother in stopping the assault and detaining the perpetrator.

Two passing motormen and responding First District officers were able to safely arrest the suspect. Fortunately, the child is conscious and was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. Anyone who witnessed this unfortunate event is encouraged to contact the First District Detectives Office at 202-299-2025.”
