Thanks to Dawn for sharing: “Bacon a statement? Some whimsical artist found the frame of an ancient alarm box on Capitol Hill and decided to ham it up.”

Made of bronze and weighing 15,000 lbs, the Statue of Freedom has crowned the dome of the Capitol since 1863. The original plaster model of the statue had a liberty cap (ancient Roman symbol of emancipated slaves). Jefferson Davis, then the Secretary of War, demanded the liberty cap to be removed from the model. The sculpture’s final version replaced the liberty cap with a military helmet topped with an American Eagle head and a crest of feathers. Ironically, an enslaved Black man named, Philip Reid, played a significant role in the construction of the Statue of Freedom.

First reported by Jon around 10:15pm last night: “extremely loud explosion heard in Capitol Hill just now.”
Confirmed by many, many others from all parts of Capitol Hill and beyond.
After much speculation readers reported: “Fire trucks responding at Walter/C/13th SE. Unclear what it was but that’s the epicenter. They’re looking around for the cause. Air still smoky.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I’ve been seeing these small, incredible pieces of protest art popping up in Capitol Hill the last few weeks. Signed by “Fearless Girls,” the first one I saw was featuring everyone’s favorite Bunker Baby. That one was on an electrical box in Stanton Park back in October. It’s since been removed. The other one I saw last night at I believe 4th and Constitution, it was about Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. Does anyone have pics of other pieces I might have missed or know anything about the Fearless Girls?” (more…)

From Summit to Soul:
“As you can see from the photo, a large piece of brick was thrown through our window in the middle of the night. We are fortunate this happened at a time when no one was in the shop; we are all safe and repairs are underway. However, incidents like this make being a small business so difficult – especially in 2020. We will pick up the pieces and carry on, just like we’ve navigated the rest of 2020. But what a rough way to start the holiday season.”
